As an avowed indoor kid, I thought I’d never get into any sports-related content. BECKHAM, Netflix’s latest sports docuseries and my latest obsession, has proved me wrong. Unsurprisingly, it turns out a large factor in handing over the keys to my ill-coordinated heart is the wild Y2K stylings of Victoria and David Beckham.
Luxury fashion and pro sports go hand in hand now, but the way that Beckham used fashion to express himself off the pitch was a novelty at the time. As the documentary shows, the push and pull between his working class upbringing and sudden wealth as a footballer fed into his relationship with clothing. It would be easy to dismiss Beckham’s costly fashion experiments as mere conspicuous consumption by a newly-minted tabloid celeb, but his flamboyant style also signaled his burgeoning independence from the conservative father figures in his life.
Victoria Adams AKA Posh Spice arrives in Beckham’s life as both a reflection of and a catalyst for this rebellious period. They recount stories of Beckham driving down lonely highways after practice in order to meet Victoria for 20 minutes in a carpark, hiding from the rabid paparazzi. You get the sense that Posh’s fierce street style was in part a statement of defiance to the press that wanted to grind her down into a docile footballer’s wife. As their relationship grows, their looks become more and more coordinated – I can just imagine Posh dressing David, pushing him to take bigger and bigger risks.
The story of the Beckhams’ rise and fall in the public eye has taken over my life this week, and my online shopping carts reflect it. From oversized leather trenches to micro club tops and sarongs, shop our edit inspired by Posh and Becks’ most iconic looks.
First, of course, we must discuss The Sarong Photo. In Beckham’s most defiant and unpopular professional period – in part spurred by his refusal to give up a relationship with Victoria – David is photographed with Posh while wearing a sarong over his pants. At the time, this photo spawned a thousand homophobic headlines in both tabloid and mainstream press. Beckham is red carded in a key England game shortly thereafter, and the sarong photo is fuel for the fire of British fans’ anger. I absolutely love this look, and David has defended it in the press for over a decade since.
Swimwear brand Tropic of C has created a wrap skirt that evokes the style of a sarong with a little more substance. It’s avail in white or black and, while listed as womenswear, would look good on anyone. Have at it, lads!

I also love David’s chunky sandal peeking out from below his sarong/trouser combo. Melissa (known for their beach-friendly jelly sandals since 1979) makes these ultra 90s mules that would go perfectly with a dupe for either Posh or Becks’ looks in that photo.

Victoria’s 90s looks are iconic, but she’s equally fashionable in her contemporary interviews for the doc, lounging in their spotless London townhouse in an oversized white button down.
I love this simple white button down from Buck Mason, a brand I first started wearing after raiding an ex’s closet. The cut looks great on any gender, and I think looks even better sized up for a loose, comfy fit. “Someone’s been in here,” David says, scrutinizing his (terrifyingly) organized closet, nudging an errant coat hanger into place. I think we know where Posh got her shirt…

Dating Posh meant Beckham’s world expanding beyond football and into the intersecting London fashion, art, and music worlds. I love this era for them – pre-platinum blonde Posh in a barely-there top, subtle experimentation for Becks like this silk headscarf over a gorgeous square neck jumper.
Between Posh’s look in this photo and Troye Sivan’s sequined looks in the Got Me Started video, silver is in the air. This slim backless halter from Urban is the ultimate barely-there club top. Add to cart.

If Beckham’s sleek black on black look is more your speed, this Simon Miller top is a perfect dupe for channeling his square neck jumper.

This may be my favorite look of the Beckhams – Posh’s matching set, Becks’ leather trench, the brown dress shoe, the his-and-hers matching haircuts, all of it. Primo Posh + Becks.
Trench coats were all over the runway at NYFW this fall, and it may be time to invest. If you’re ready to splurge on a signature leather duster, this trench from JW Anderson is absolutely stunning. Its oversized fit is very 00’s Beckham, and its hood is perfect for hiding from prying paparazzi.

If you don’t want to spend a few months’ rent on a leather jacket, we get it. This shorter – but no less stylish – option from Todd Snyder is timeless and made to last.

Posh rocked a leather jacket just as hard as her husband. This leather set is very Charlie’s Angels. Bonus points if you can get your partner to wear a matching outfit.
This cropped leather jacket from AllSaints echoes the mock neck of Posh’s iconic look but features a slightly more contemporary boxy shape. I bought my first leather jacket in college from AllSaints in London and it’s still going strong – they’re my go to for leather goods made to last.
