Last summer I was lucky enough to be in Copenhagen, epicenter of the Scandi Girl Style movement that had been all over my algorithm. While strolling past crowds of Danes lounging in the sun by the canals, I realized it wasn’t just that everyone looked stylish – something revolutionary was in the air: everyone was…comfortable. No tight jean shorts cutting off circulation. No strappy kitten heels waiting to break your ankles. The Scandinavian women around me had all adopted the same practical but timeless combo as their summer uniform: chic sundresses paired with modern sneakers.
It felt like I had cracked a code. Summer has always been a negotiation between style and comfort for me – “How many blocks can I walk in these shoes?” “I want to wear sneakers, but am I really going to wear jeans or leggings in 90 degree weather?” As the Danes effortlessly hopped on and off their eco-friendly bikes and arranged Instagram-perfect picnics in gorgeous public parks, I resolved a) to come back to this city at all costs and b) to overhaul my summer wardrobe and adopt this simple but individualizable Scandi style formula. Here are my top picks for sundress and sneaker combos for a stylish but comfortable summer (it’s possible!!):

THE DRESSES
Any Scandi style list has to start with Ganni. The unstoppable Danish brand has blown up in the last couple years thanks to their flattering silhouettes and unique fabrics. Their U Neck Midi Dress’s strategic ruching and adjustable drawstring neckline ensure a flirty, summery fit.

Another Scandi fashion brand making serious waves, Stine Goya is known for its unique shapes and bright patterns. The Stina dress is a flattering classic with a full midi skirt and gorgeous front button detailing. It’s made from 100% organic cotton, in keeping with the brand’s very Scandinavian focus on sustainability.

The sneaker-and-sundress trend goes from day to night with this classic black silk slip from Quince. Throw a button down over it to dress it down during the day, or rock it solo with matching black sneakers for a sleek, nighttime look. The best part? Their silk dresses are 100% machine washable.

Sandy Liang’s Kleen dress in black gingham is flirty, summery, and has the Scandi Girl favorite puffed sleeve silhouette. The cut and pattern make this dress perfect for a picnic moment or a casual date night. Pair it with Sandy Liang’s Salomon sneaker collab (below) for a head-to-toe SL look.

My most complimented dress is definitely the Cadel Slip from Araks. Made iconic by paparazzi photos of Zoe Kravitz running around New York with Channing Tatum in a blue version of the slip, it is the essential easy, cool girl dress for summer. The pintucking hugs the waist, giving subtle shape to the whisper-thin silk georgette. Embrace your inner Barbie this summer with this hot pink version.

THE SHOES
The Salomon XT-6 Expanse Cottage Core shoes are just baiting me with this name. I love the delicate chamomile yellow color paired with the sporty silhouette and detailing. The sockliner and interior are decorated with a cute floral pattern, making them the perfect pair to throw on with your flowiest, full bloom sundresses.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a Hoka girlie. After years of working on my feet for hours at a time in shoes with no support, a friend turned me on to the Hoka Cliftons and my aches and pains disappeared practically overnight. The Clifton L Suede comes in cute colors and can code switch in a flash between being used on a long morning run in an athleisure set and going on a date that night in a flirty dress.

The “it” sneaker of 2023, the Adidas Sambas are an all time classic originally based on the silhouette of soccer sneakers. The combo of suede overlays and leather uppers dress up the shoes and make them a versatile pick for any occasion. My recent move has been pairing these with the Quince slip dress for a day to night look.

If you’re like the shape of the Adidas Sambas but are looking for something more unique, I love the unisex Onitsuka Tiger / Asics Mexico Delegation model. Based on the shoe design made for the Japanese team in the ’68 Mexico City games, they have a retro low profile feel but are still comfortable enough for long days pounding the pavement.

Hoff is an up and coming sneaker brand out of Spain whose fun colors and retro silhouettes immediately caught my eye. I love the Y2K candy-color neons of their Valencia Sneaker, especially when paired with the shoes’ retro shape. Hoff’s mission is to create shoes that are never boring, and these statement shoes definitely fit the bill! Let them take center stage by pairing them with a simple dress like the Buck Mason Artisan Cotton Mesa dress.
