Linen makes up a bulk of my summer wardrobe because it’s the perfect weight and breathability for changeable seaside weather. You can’t go wrong with a breezy linen dress or a lightweight pair of pants. Cotton may be softer at first, but linen evolves as you wear and wash it. The fabric is made from flax plant stems (as opposed to cotton, which is made from the bolls that grow around cotton seeds) and feels a bit rougher in a good way. The texture is a key part of the look, which I associate with mid-day walks and warm-weather gatherings. Read on to see our favorite linen picks that will have you wishing the season never ends.

Women’s Linen
My cover-up collection consists of mainly shapeless, oversized dresses so I was thrilled to find this super flattering and versatile set. This top is an extra-long button-down, and the shorts are high-waisted with an elasticized band. I wore this set in Bermuda over my bikini to grab lunch and discovered it also works great with a bra top for a floaty summer look.

A smocked top with flared skirt is one of my favorite dress silhouettes, and the fact that this one is designed with a sustainably grown linen only adds to the success of this piece. The ruffle details and (lightly) puffed sleeve contribute a dose of femininity that’s perfect for a cookout or rooftop party. (It also works great off-the-shoulder if you feel like baring a little more skin.)

I’ve worn this shirt as a cover-up, on a six-hour road trip, and right now — as I write. It’s become my summer shacket because it works both as a top layer (when it’s chillier) or by itself. The deep collar gives me plenty of freedom of movement (but doesn’t get close to revealing my bra) and while it seems like it’d be sheer, it’s absolutely opaque.

For another top option that feels a touch more festive, consider this adorable ruffled blouse from AYR. It has an elasticized waist that goes great with high-, mid- and low-waisted bottoms, and is made from 100% Irish linen.

Linen shorts tend to err on the casual, drawstring side, but these toile beauties offer an atypically polished look. They have a high-waist and two elevated-cargo-style pockets, and if sets are your style, try the ruched matching top ($42).

Men’s Linen
You cannot go wrong with Alex Crane’s cham pants in any of the 9 colors available. I love that these pants have a structured jean-like design, as opposed to many pajama-lounge styles you see in linen. You’ll find yourself building outfits around these ultra-soft, French linen pants.

When the weather is sticky and Sweaty Back is inevitable, a featherweight linen shirt is a great alternative to a T-shirt. You’ll love the relaxed collar and casual-but-tailored cut of this short-sleeved button-down.

You’ll also need a long-sleeve button-down, and my top choice is this rosé colored option to pair with light pants. It’s not overly pale (the saturation of color makes it more of a Look look) and you’ll love the Coconuttons™ (buttons made from coconut shells), which add an island feel to every shirt.

Another summer must-have from Alex Crane, this linen jacket will elevate his everyday T-shirt and jeans look. With two front pockets, it’s reminiscent of a chore coat but with a non-boxy silhouette. Choose from six colors (including several striped options).
