No one does summer like the French. Bottles of rosé on the beach, picnics in picturesque fields, strolls through ancient flea markets – in France these aren’t occasional indulgences, they’re simply what’s done as soon as it hits 75 degrees. And while I won’t be making it across the pond, I’m determined to manifest a French vibe this summer via the must-have accessory of the queen of French style, Jane Birkin. While herself the namesake of a $10,000 Hermès bag, Birkin’s summer look always included a much more affordable and equally timeless staple: the basket bag.
A 60s style, sex, music, and film icon, Birkin personifies the just-tumbled-out-of-bed-and-onto-a-yacht cool that is my perennial summer style goal. Retailers this summer have caught on to Jane’s must-have accessory and are offering contemporary spins on this cool French girl style classic. Here are my eight recs for basket bags roomy enough for a bottle of wine or petite enough to compliment a daring mini dress à la Jane (go for it!).
The Sobremesa Market Bag is big enough for a picnic for two and stylish enough to be worn for a casual date night out. Designed by Laila Gohar for HAY as part of her “Sobremesa” line, the bag is meant to evoke long chats after a late summer dinner. The lid is secured with a cheeky red button, allowing the versatile bag to also be used as closed storage in the home.

Dôen’s Grande Marion Tote offers a slouchy, casual silhouette but still evokes the classic French market bag via its woven construction. Each bag is handmade from natural fibers by Peruvian craftsmen, commissioned by Dôen. The Marion Tote is unique enough to look like you picked it up at a flea market in Cannes – without the flight to France.

I love the daring color and thoughtful detailing on this Toast basket bag! Made by Colombian and Spanish artisans, the bag features a woven outer layer made from toquilla, a traditional material made from palm leaves. The striped handle and vibrant green color make this classic silhouette feel playful and contemporary.

The BTB Los Angeles Leah Tote comes in 3 cute colors, but I’d channel your inner Beach Goth and go for the unexpected black. The dark color means you can pair it with a LBD and take it out on the town. The crocheted straw body and scalloped edge make it a total statement piece to anchor your capsule wardrobe this summer.

If you want to evoke the classic Birkin basket bag shape, but want something constructed out of sturdy leather, my pick would be the leather edition of the Madewell Small Transport Crossbody. Its slouchy shape and woven body still give basket, while its leather body and straps make it a more substantial, versatile bag. I love that you can clip the straps on and off, taking it from a handsfree crossbody to a cute tote in a flash.

Loeffler Randall is always on trend, and this bag is no exception. How cute are those ruffles!? I could totally see Jane rocking this raffia tote anywhere from a Parisian street to a St. Tropez boardwalk. Their raffia bags also pair perfectly with the rest of their summer collection, featuring raffia and crochet detailing throughout.

Nab this luxurious Mansur Gavriel option while their summer sale lasts! The mix of rustic raffia and butter-soft, sophisticated red leather is undeniably eye-catching. The cinched tie closure gives the body subtle shape and movement and allows the bag to be worn as a gathered handbag or a flatter crossbody.

My summer obsession is the mini bag. This option from Staud is big enough to still hold your essentials (phone, keys, tinted SPF, corkscrew, commute snack) but small enough to pair with that summer mini dress you’ve been waiting to debut. It also features an interior pocket, perfect for keeping your phone at the ready for any Instagrammable moments.

So, if you’re still in search of your signature accessory this summer, take a page out of Jane Birkin’s style guide and pair a basket bag with anything from a bikini to a model-off-duty tee and jeans combo. My basket bag has become a year-round staple, offering a jolt of salty, summery nostalgia even in the depths of winter. Maybe yours will finally inspire you to learn French…or at least the lyrics to one of Jane’s songs.
