It's with chagrin that I admit I've lost many beloved summer hats. My favorite straw hat flew off my head during a photo op on a windy dock. A cherished raffia hat escaped the magnetic hat clip (that I was duped into thinking was a genius hands-free carrier) never to be recovered. I try not to get too attached to my summer headwear, but when you find the perfect cover, it’s hard to imagine life without it.
Summer hats are more than just a fashion statement — they’re part of the ever-evolving sun protection team preventing age spots and damage on your face. From bucket hats to western-inspired hats to natural fiber grass hats, a well-thought-out hat wardrobe is a seasonal must-have. A variety of materials and styles will ensure you have just the right one whether you’re sitting poolside, going hiking, or picnicking at your local park. I’ve shopped around to find the best packable, terry cloth, and handmade options that combine style and function. Peruse the list below to find your new favorite warm-weather accessory.

Fear and Loathing-Inspired
This hat immediately gave me Hunter S. Thompson vibes (pair it with some orange-tinted lenses and you’re on your way to a great costume). You don’t have to worry about fit thanks to an adjustable poly bungee cord and the moisture-wicking inner mesh sweatband will come in handy on summer’s hottest days. The brim is the perfect not-too-long length for keeping the sun out of your eyes without impeding your vision, making it great for hiking and more active days.

Take a stroll in SoHo on a Saturday and you’ll see this hat as part of more than a few all-black ensembles. It works as athleisure (and beyond) with a no-frills, sporty chic look that’ll match your belt bag perfectly.

Pleated & Packable
If you already have a collection of wide-brimmed sun hats, you might be looking for a different silhouette to zhuzh up your headwear game. This Lorna Murray collaboration in the Ravello style features a pleated design in natural grass fibers that’s delightfully packable. You won’t have to worry about how to avoid crushing it in your luggage — the whole thing collapses neatly (and won’t dent easily). I love how the brim is wide but also stays closer to your face (like a funnel) than a traditional sun hat.

Everyday Bucket
This army green canvas hat has a fun tomboy sensibility with sponge-printed black daisies. It can add a bit of edge to a sweet sundress, and if you prefer a more feminine design, it’s also offered with embroidered flowers.

To Match Your Favorite Beach Towel
The terry cloth tracksuit was my middle school outfit of choice and the material will always hold a special place in my heart. I love this fuzzy cherry-colored bucket hat for a bold dash of color (also available in mint and beige).

Ranching Ready
If you're planning a trip to a dude ranch or going glamping this summer, you'll want an aesthetically appropriate hat that doesn’t take more than its fair share of space in your suitcase. The crushable design means you won’t worry about a separate hat box or making sure it keeps its shape through rough and tumble travel. With a 3.5-inch brim, the Lasso is the perfect choice for keeping the sun out of your eyes while ensuring that you look on brand. Constructed of wool felt, this hat features a pinch front crown, leather hat band, and adjustable leather chin strap. It’s available in five sizes and the adjustable velcro strap under the sweatband allows you to get the perfect fit.

One-of-a-Kind
I discovered the cleverly named, Toronto-based, crochet artist @knotbadgirlriri on Instagram. Her knit creations range from sweater vests to diamond tops to many, many colorful bucket hats. If you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind, handmade design, try this fluffy number in 100% acrylic yarn. By supporting an independent fiber artist, you can feel good about your purchase knowing that you're helping to support creativity and individuality in a world of mass-produced, fast-fashion bucket hats.

Jackie O Worthy
When I imagine the classic summer hat, I think of the Peter Beaton studio on Federal Street in Nantucket. Sadly, the shop (and all the beautiful ribbons) are no longer there but you can still find stunning hats in the online store. This one, named after picturesque ‘Sconset, has a 2-inch (interchangeable) black grosgrain ribbon and ships in the iconic black and white striped hat box.

For an extra bucket-y bucket hat, this straw number from Janessa Leone offers all the structure you could ask for (but is still malleable enough to pack in your suitcase without concern.)
