I've been thinking a lot about what my wardrobe means for the impact of over-consumption and climate change. My main thought: How many garments do I discard each year that take up space in a landfill? I love good basics like turtlenecks. However, the main store, a fast-fashion retailer where I've purchased my coveted fall and winter turtlenecks for years, has let me down. Each season, I can count on holes in my sweaters, fading, and fabric peeling even when following all the washing rules to help clothes last longer.

During a late-night window shopping session, I scrolled the SSENSE sale and saw a white Wolford Colorado Bodysuit on sale for $100. The regular price—$295—gave me sticker shock. While $100 was the most I’d ever spent on a basic, I took the plunge because I’d heard the quality of Wolford products is unmatched.

After one wear, I understood why these bodysuits are beloved by stylists, celebrities, and fashion enthusiasts alike. The fabric is so breathable that you feel like you have nothing on, but it also contours your curves without feeling too tight or restrictive. Feeling restricted is the problem I often find with other options meant to act as day-to-day wardrobe-building basics while also contouring the body.

So, I wanted to hear from fashion experts about why Wolford bodysuits are worth the investment and why they're always a part of their stylist kit. Keep reading for more!

A Tiny Wolford History Lesson

Since the 1950s, this Bregenz, Austria-founded brand has crafted what the brand calls "skinwear." While I'd imagine how they get their beloved, celeb-approved bodysuits to feel breathable and comfortable while they shape the body is proprietary, we do know their best seller—and my favorite bodysuit—The Colorado is made with 48% cotton, 46% polyamide, 6% elastane.

Why Stylists Love Wolford

Celebrity stylist Harrison Crite tells TQE: “The quality is unmatched. No matter your body type (curvy or thin), it makes you look sleek and timeless." Additionally, Crite says Wolford bodysuits can serve a dual purpose— at $295 a pop, that's a welcomed note.

"Wolford bodysuits not only serve as undergarments but as fashion staples," he explains. "They differ because they can be utilized as clothing. The cuts of their bodysuits mimic those of everyday basics women are naturally drawn to whether it's pairing with jeans or layering with a blazer."

Which Style Should You Invest In?

Nearly $300 for one top is steep, but both stylists agree the black Colorado Bodysuit is the staple to invest in. Why? "Classic black because it's timeless, and you can maximize its versatility in your wardrobe," Crite shares. Additionally, Ashley Afriyie, former fashion editor turned stylist with over a decade of experience in luxury fashion, says the Colorado turtleneck bodysuit is her all-time favorite because the turtleneck is a classic. "I think everyone should own a classic turtleneck in their closet," she tells us.

If turtlenecks aren't your style, she also recommends the Jamaika bodysuit. [It is a] perfect take of a classic tank top. I love to pair this item with suits (skirt/blazer combo and or pants suit combo)." She also notes this top is great paired with classic jeans and a blazer. "It's a very versatile piece and worth the investment. You don't have to keep buying cheap tank tops."

Now that you've taken the plunge on this basic investment, how do you care for it?

Wolford bodysuits are designed to last for years. So that means no more purchasing tees and turtlenecks that won’t last and, subsequently, end up in a landfill. However, how you care for them is essential. The brand recommends machine washing on a gentle cycle with cold water. For extra care of my bodysuits, I place them in a mesh wash bag before putting them in the washing machine with Woolite. Then, I lay them flat to dry.

How Do I Wear My Bodysuits?

Wolford Bodysuits Are Worth The Investment

The fabric and cut of the Colorado Bodysuit are instantly flattering with everything from a mini skirt to jeans to leather pants. However, I like to wear a shapewear bra and nipple covers to bring the look full circle. Right now, my go-to nipple covers are NOOD Nipple Covers. Afriyie recommends the silicon cover-ups by Hollywood Fashion Secret. “This product disappears perfectly underneath form-fitting suits such as the bodysuit,  so you don’t see their nipples, and they don’t have to worry about seeing a bra shape or wearing one.”

We know this piece is on the pricey side of the fashion spectrum, but as a newbie to the Wolford brand, I am happy with my pieces. I love the chic energy they instantly bring to my outfits and my ability to wear them alone or under jackets and blazers!
