If you haven’t heard of the Tomato Girl trend, think of this aesthetic as cottagecore but less twee and with more flavor. It’s not just about the look and the stuff — a tomato girl is someone who’d grow her own produce and go on a solo trip. Yes, it manifests as fashion but it’s closely related to travel and food with shades of DIY. Tomato girls make lemon posset in a lemon peel and love fresh flowers (but not a perfectly coiffed bouquet — too contrived) and swear by Les Pres Sales Butter. The vibe is close to nature but not anti-bougie and best embodied by Meredith Hayden (@wishbonekitchen) whose cooking-meets-travel-meets-bold-fashion-choices presence is irresistibly wholesome-aspirational. Read on to see our Tomato Girl picks that will channel just the right energy when you’re casually renovating your home or gardening or assembling a slice of toast that looks like a work of art.
Vivacity is a must for Tomato Girl life, and nothing says I’m excited to be alive like a bold print. Can’t you imagine wearing this on the Amalfi Coast, sipping an Aperol spritz, and taking way too many photos? The smocked top is great for going braless, and the elegant draping and belt keep it on the stylish side of comfortable.

Literally called “The Positano,” this bikini print is begging to go abroad. The tie-front bandeau design is cut from sun-protective fabric with SPF 30+ and you can pair it with a cheeky bottom or a fuller coverage, high-waisted option.

In keeping with the lemon theme, this stunning print by Anne-Louise Ewen is a reproduction of an original oil painting. It’ll add a heady dose of color to any room and bring the magic of Circe (the witch from the Odyssean fame) to modern-day Tomato Girls.

A hot girl book is 100% part of the TG lifestyle. Delia Cai, author of my most recent favorite novel Central Places, recommended this title that, apparently, everyone is reading. This 90s book about romantic relationships tackles the question “Is true love possible?” and is next on my to-read list.

If Tomato Girl-ism was embodied in one action, it’d be assembling an impromptu caprese salad, for which you will need a high-quality olive oil. This one has aromas of green grass and tomato with delicate tinges of fig and apple that goes great with meat, fish, and roasted vegetables. Pro tip: spring for the spout ($8) for a no-sweat drizzling experience.

I was split between a wicker basket purse and this market tote as the TG bag, but I had to go with this beautiful canvas design that has a strap for the express purpose of holding fresh flowers. It’s so farmer’s market ready you can practically smell the peaches and overpriced sourdough.

Living well, not necessarily hedonistically, is the ethos of TG life, and what’s better than a coffee shop quality latte without leaving home? These canned oat milk lattes are my latest addiction. From the Filipino-owned brand Narra, they’re available in strawberry matcha, roasted oolong, and black milk tea flavors. I’m unwilling to commit to a favorite so I suggest getting the variety pack with all three.

After a long day of living well, you’ll need an SPF-and-makeup-melting cleanser. I love the texture of this marshmallow jelly formula that feels like rubbing honey on your face. Unlike honey, though, it rinses off easily and leaves your skin feeling hydrated and fresh. The scent is cinnamon-y and I love the jelly-to-milk transformation when you add water.

Yes, this is one a little on-the-nose, but it’s tomato perfect and designed by one of my favorite artists. Anastasia Inciardi’s mostly food-based art takes everyday comestibles and makes them frame-worthy. (Frame not included.)

A lip mask made with clarified butter (ghee) is the functional meets indulgent intersection that Tomato Girls thrive on. You’ll love the swipeable texture and hydrating formula which includes squalene and kahai oil.

Maxine Midtbo is my favorite artist of the moment (I mentioned her amazing clay workshop in TQE’s July Add to Cart), and this abalone shell jewelry dish is unbelievably gorgeous. The chunky design and mix of color and texture speak directly to my Tomato Girl heart.

Embodying a carefree, go-with-the-flow Tomato Girl mindset might not come naturally to those of us who are more high-strung, but at least you can fake it ‘til you make it with a bikini that channels La Dolce Vita and olive oil that helps you put your best hostess foot forward.
