Summer is rapidly approaching and with that comes a new season of fashion trends. After initially viewing the collections on the runway last September, we’ve had time to metabolize what we saw and see how they have influenced the fashion industry since their initial showing. Many of these trends have made their way off the runway to red carpets, online retailers, and social media. Considering all of this, we’ve narrowed it down – here are the five key summer trends to know and our top product picks.

White Dresses
White dresses for summer? I know what you’re thinking. That’s nothing new, but as seen all over the SS24 runways, brands are getting creative with fabrics and textures to give the white dress a refreshed feel. Labels like Vivienne Westwood and Ferragamo showcased a modern twist to crisp cotton poplin while we saw large floral embroidery at Valentino, Stella McCartney, and Gabriela Hearst. We are already seeing these pop up everywhere online – Ulla Johnson, Cos, Staud, and Anthropology, to name a few. This trend will not go away quickly, so invest in some statement white dresses that can be worn for summers to come.
Athletic Prep
With the rise in popularity of pickleball, it’s no surprise that now is the time for the preppy athletic aesthetic to make its comeback. This is directly linked to Miu Miu’s micro-mini pleated skirt (relaunched on the SS22 runways) followed by the SS24 collection which had an overarching theme of laid-back prep school. With blazers thrown over nightgowns and a change of comfortable shoes in the bags, think Serena van der Woodsen at Constance. Other designers have embodied these trends, as well, with updated classics like polo shirts, track jackets, button-downs, and school uniform blazers.
If the runways didn’t prove this trend enough, Zendaya solidified it with her Challengers press tour wardrobe. From her shimmering pleated tennis dress with tennis ball stilettos by Loewe to her cable knit sweater from Brunello Cucinelli, Zendaya and her stylist, Law Roach, nailed it per usual.
Sheer Layering
Sheer dressing is nothing new to runways and red carpets, but for the first time, it’s making a big imprint on the masses. Being one of the most widely seen SS24 runway trends, tulle, mesh, and chiffon were among the fabrics used by Brandon Maxwell, Prada, Mugler, Saint Laurent, and countless others. To make this more wearable for every day, many brands are adding a sheer overlay to existing items such as tube tops or mini dresses for more coverage. On the flip side, consider using a fully sheer top, dress, or skirt as a layering piece over your existing outfit.
Butter Yellow
Coming off the rise of hot pink and cherry red, this muted yellow evokes the same cheerful feeling in a more subtle, silky way. Brands like Bottega Venetta and Proenza Schouler are some notable brands incorporating this color into their collections while celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Sydney Sweeney, and Aubrey Plaza have had major press around their butter-yellow looks. This color is perfect for someone who gravitates toward neutrals like khaki or cream but wants a pop of color in their wardrobe for the upcoming season.

Bloomers
Over the last few years, we have seen a rise in undergarments as outerwear through the growing popularity of slip dresses, corsets, and bustiers. In 2022, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid sparked conversation around their controversial “no-pants” outfits, later seen throughout celebrity street style and on the runways. This trend of wearing underwear over tights or sheer leggings is not for everyone which is why many labels carry bloomers as an alternative. And with the release of Bridgerton Season 3, the rise of this 19th-century item comes at the perfect time. However, I think this trend might send a Victorian-era child into a coma.
