Over the past five years, I’ve lived in five different apartments. Bouncing from space to space made it difficult for me to actually want to invest in furniture and decor, especially since every space has its own dimensions which means bringing pieces to and fro isn’t always possible.
This year, I decided it was time to make a change. You could say I was growing up, but I really think it’s that I finally found a space I wanted to make feel like home. It was time. I had the essentials: a bed, dresser, and mirror I loved and was set on making work. The one item I needed was a rug. I’d never invested in a rug before because frankly I didn’t have the space, money, or desire. Yet, rugs are arguably one of the most important pieces in a room. A rug is simultaneously the main event and a background dancer. Swapping in a new rug is one of the easiest ways to completely change the vibe of a space.
Finding a good rug can be a challenge. There’s so much to consider: materials, size, design, and price. While I had barely started my rug research, I went into the process knowing I wanted a colorful rug. Preferably something orange or pink. I searched high and low, looking for pieces that looked high-quality and met my taste preferences, but also would not send me into a spiral about making poor financial decisions. Then I came across my perfect rug at none other than Revival Rugs.
Meet Revival Rugs
The Revival Rugs founders saw a space in the rug market (which traditionally lacks transparency regarding pricing and quality) to provide high-quality craftsmanship rugs that are traceable and affordable.
With half of their founders in the US and the other half in Turkey, Revival Rugs is uniquely positioned to source the best of the best from what many would call the rug capital of the world and also understand the tastes of the modern American customer, which makes up much of their demographic.
Revival sells unique, vintage rugs and also offers new collections of hand-woven, limited edition rugs. This is possible thanks to the direct relationships the brand has created with rug curators and makers in India, Turkey, and Morocco. If you want to take a deep dive into their curation and creation process, you can do so on their website.
From sourcing to overdyeing to shipping to your door, Revival is highly involved in every step of the process. This allows them to give customers transparency around their supply chain, which helps explain some common questions like why things are priced the way they are. Because Revival’s business model cuts out the wholesalers and retailers, customers (aka You! Me! We!) are able to purchase these high-quality, one-of-a-kind pieces for prices that feel more fair than what most competitors offer. Pricing is dependent on style and size, but you can find small rugs from just over $100 to large, handmade vintage ones that go up to $3,000. I would not say Revival’s rugs are cheap by any means – even affordable feels like a bit of a stretch – but if you do your due diligence on what else is out there, you’ll see that their prices beat their competitors almost every time, especially when you’re looking at the nitty gritty quality markers.
Time To Revive My Space
I came to the conclusion that I wanted a checkered rug, but many of the options I saw online looked a bit tacky. When I saw the Persida– a bright, checkered Moroccan Rug– I knew it had to be mine. It looked stunning online: colorful but not obnoxious with a shaggy material that lends itself to a more casual feel. Revival also adds curator’s notes that clue you in to the details of the rug you may not notice online as well as important cultural motifs, like the meaning of the materials and design– an unnecessary but very welcome touch. Reading about the motifs of the rug only furthered my decision that yes, I needed this rug immediately.
I bought the rug and anxiously awaited its arrival. I want to note that Revival was kind enough to give me a discount code to try this rug at a fraction of the price. The rug shipped surprisingly fast, which isn’t too shocking as I live in California, where the brand has a warehouse. At 8'8" x 11'2", this rug is quite large and thus heavy. It came in a large box, but luckily with side handles to make carrying it easier. Unluckily, my bedroom is up two flights of stairs, but nevertheless I made it. Apparently, there’s nothing like the burning desire to finally finish decorating your room to motivate you.
Taking the rug out of the box and setting it up can be a one-person job, but I think it will be a lot more enjoyable if you make it a two-person job, at least if you are getting a rug that’s this big. I could have waited for others to come and help me, but I was too antsy to wait so I did it myself. Getting the rug under my already set up bed was a bit of hassle with a lot of elbow grease and many disgruntled sighs involved, but I did it.
In the moment, I really did wish there was an option for white glove delivery (Revival only offers this service if your order is $5k or more), but ultimately all of the setup fuss was worth it. This rug is the perfect anchor piece for my room. I wanted my space to feel creative but still have a calmness about it, and this rug, which sits right under my neutral bed setup, is the pop of color I needed to do just that.
The plush, high-pile wool is a dream for my toes, especially on chilly mornings. This type of rug does have a tendency to shed, so it takes a bit of upkeep. I’m happy to pay that small price if it means I get to keep the one piece that brings everything in my bedroom together. I love the braided fringe around the rug’s edge; it brings an authentic, handmade softness especially in contrast to most mass-produced rugs' stark corners.
Long story short, I am obsessed with my Revival rug. The experience was seamless and the rug is divine. This is definitely an investment piece for most, but I sleep easy knowing that (if I take care of it well) this piece will come with me wherever I go next – and I have a really nice rug under my bed.
