Over the last decade, cutting-edge baby products have hit the market in full force. When I was shopping for gear for my oldest daughter back in 2014, my husband and I drove more than 40 minutes away to a baby supply store that housed different strollers, cribs, rockers and anything else you could possibly need.
At the store, I whipped out my Baby Bargains book – which I spent $20 on – to find out what I needed for the new baby, to get ratings on the top baby products, to learn what gear was the safest. Before we left the store, we ordered all the furniture, including the crib and baby mattress, and waited 16+ weeks for it to get delivered.
That is not what baby shopping is like today, thanks to innovative direct-to-consumer baby companies like Newton Baby. Now, you can get the best of the best sent directly to your home. And it’s why this time around, I went with the Newton Crib Mattress (from $199) and Crib (from $499), products that have more than 2,000 five star reviews.
So, is this mattress worth it? I had to find out for myself.
A New Kind Of Mattress
When it comes to sleep, parents will do just about anything to get some… even if that means inventing a new kind of baby mattress. And that’s exactly what Newton founder Michael Rothbard did. His older son was a difficult sleeper, so when he and his wife found out they were having twins, Rothbard was determined to find a safe, comfortable mattress for the babies.
He searched the market and couldn’t find anything other than expensive, organic, firm mattresses covered in stiff waterproof casing that prevented air flow. So like any great invention, desperation called for action – and Rothbard took things into his own hands.
And with that, Newton Baby was born.
What’s New About Newton?
With more than 2,000 five star reviews, it’s clear Rothbard wasn’t the only parent who needed this new mattress. I remember the mattresses I used for my older two daughters – they were hard as a rock, with an uncomfortable waterproof casing. I didn’t want to sleep on the mattress, so how could I expect my babies to want to sleep on it?!
As a mom, the standout feature is the 100% breathability factor. Newton’s patented Wovenair core (a new technology that was invented in Japan and now used in the United States) is 90% air, 10% food-grade polymer, and has none of the foam, latex or glue that other mattresses contain. On top of the core is a Natural Viscose Cover and a dual layer quilted cover for extra comfort.
The mattress is hypoallergenic and free from toxic chemicals. Doctors recommend it as its breathability lowers risk of suffocation and overheating. It really allows parents to breathe easy when the baby is sleeping.
Another highlight is the cleanliness feature. Newton mattresses are fully machine washable. You can put them directly in the shower, bathtub, or washing machine and clean away any bacteria or germs that may arise. And with how unpredictable babies are – from accidents to diaper explosions – it’s imperative parents can easily clean anything the baby comes in contact with. Another check for parents' peace of mind.
More Than Just Mattresses
Since launching in 2015, Newton Baby has expanded from just mattresses to a handful of other products including cribs – which I have for baby number three. I opted for the Austin Convertible Crib ($449.99) in the color natural and am thrilled with both the aesthetic and the quality.
For my older two daughters, I searched high and low for a high-quality, greenguard certified crib. I found ones in stores, but they were incredibly expensive and took 16 to 20 weeks to ship. The Newton Baby crib costs a fraction of what my other kids’ cribs cost, but has the same high-end feel with the same safety features. I could also order it online, and it arrived at my house in less than a week.
The crib needs to be assembled at home – but that’s a small price to pay for the stylish and safe crib you get without breaking the bank. It took my husband under 30 minutes to set up!
Finally, the crib is crafted in Italy from sustainable beachwood and is Greenguard Gold Certified.
Sweet Dreams
While all babies are different and sleep is a hot commodity with infants, there are no guarantees that any product will make your baby a better sleeper. But, I can promise you, with the safety features Newton Baby has in place as the parent, you will feel less anxious when your little one is sleeping. And by feeling less anxious, you’ll probably sleep better – I know I do.
So, now all that’s left to say is…. sweet dreams!
