The visible underwear trend, while easily exhibited in many different forms, can be traced back to Miu Miu’s spring 2022 runway show, where the brand’s logofied briefs protruded from the waistbands of belted low-rise skirts and slacks. Collections that followed showcased similar pairings, but also introduced the briefs plainly visible under sheer dresses and, finally, for fall 2023, worn alone or doubled-up over tights as the final layer of a look.
As the Italian fashion house churned out more colorful iterations in various fabrics and finishes each season, we saw exposed underwear championed by celebrities on the red carpet and after-hours, coinciding with Miu Miu’s rise to popularity (the luxury label topped Lyst’s hottest brands report for Q3). While Kendall Jenner was first to the party in one of the satin lingerie sets following the 2022 Met Gala, Emma Corrin wore the olive knit underwear sans pants at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, and Sydney Sweeney pulled off the exposed-boxer look with a pair of hot pants at the spring 2024 show during Paris Fashion Week.
Equally determined to dispel the “celebrities, they’re just like us!” testimony and intrigued by the many brave souls on TikTok styling them with ease, I opted for the knit logo panties in purple, which retail for a whopping $1,070, and took them for a spin on the town. A Peek at the Waistband
I started with a rather tame outfit combination, allowing my Miu Miu briefs to peek out from the undone waistband of my Agolde jeans. The unzipped fly folded over at the front is a popular style move that falls in line with the deconstructed denim trend. Plus, most TikTok users are styling their Miu Miu briefs this way, with the logo pulled high above baggy pants or a low-rise micro mini. To push the limits and reveal a little more skin, I left two buttons unfastened on my DVF cardigan.
This outfit screamed loungewear to me, what with the stretch fit of my flares and the relaxed look of my ribbed sweater that only felt cozier teamed with cashmere panties. But I’d easily wear this combination with clogs, a puffer, and dark sunglasses for brunch, or even a strappy heel for a night out. While offering a peek at your underwear in this way feels like a faux pas, it’s becoming decidedly more normal to show your panties in public. And if the goal is to display your logo love, this is one suitable option for doing so.

Sheer and Exposed
For a night out in my Miu Miu underwear, I’d likely wear a naked dress à la Jenner, and I felt particularly excited by this unlined Superdown maxi, made from polyester and spandex. With long sleeves and an ankle-skimming hemline, I felt like I was showing less skin. Sam Edelman flats and thick black Miu Miu sunglasses accented the shade of my dress, rather than the knit panties underneath.
Moving was so easy in this cozy sweater dress, which somehow made me feel unbothered by my plain-as-day underwear lines. I’m a firm believer that we all have the right to display our curves in whatever clothes make us comfortable, and this outfit felt like a strong testament to that.
Over Tights
I was definitely most apprehensive about wearing my Miu Miu briefs over tights, mostly because I wasn’t so sure the proportions would be flattering. Also, most of us do not possess the model-like frame of Emma Corrin. However, I boldly stepped into the park with my purple Miu Miu panties on full display beneath a striped tank and a Miu Miu cashmere sweater tee. I walked tall in Reformation’s Lolita platform loafers and accessorized with Miu Miu shield sunglasses and my Jacquemus Le Riviera mini bag, which features purple hardware to complement the pièce de résistance. I played with wearing my Ganni herringbone coat on top, and also tried taking it off.
As I sat on a bench, trying to decide how fellow park goers were judging my outfit, I have to say I felt like I was wearing a costume. But maybe that’s due to my own lack of confidence and unwillingness to fully commit to the no-pants look. I did spend some time walking around in the pantyhose and briefs, but I felt a lot more comfortable with a coat on top as my final layer. If I was to try this combination again, I think I’d select black underwear instead, just to avoid such a stark contrast.
Underwear as Outerwear
The underwear-as-outerwear trend continues to prevail as a method for pushing boundaries, with or without my convictions. I’m definitely partial to showing my briefs underneath a naked dress, as I felt that outfit most accurately represented my sense of style. But the point isn’t just to show your panties, it’s to flash who they’re by, so the prospect of them being Miu Miu is key. Do I think the trend would be fueled by quite as much staying power if it wasn’t traced back to the most popular luxury brand on the market? Probably not. But then again, we also have the prominence of social media buzz and a dedicated crop of celebrity muses to thank for that.
