This is going to be gross. Like, really gross. I’m one of the approximately 4 billion people in the world who get dandruff at some point in their lives. (Well, chances are you are too.) For as long as I can remember I’ve had this problem; whenever I so much as put my hand on my head, tiny white flakes will fall down like it’s the middle of a snowstorm. Dandruff is annoying, embarrassing, and seemingly infinite.
If you also suffer from dandruff and Head & Shoulders ain’t cutting it, today may be your lucky day.

We don't like
- Jupiter is quite expensive ($42.50 every 60 days)
- Some of the other products aren’t as necessary as the shampoo and conditioner
What is dandruff and what causes it?
Dandruff occurs when dried skin (dead skin cells) from your scalp sheds. Sometimes it's accompanied by intense itchiness; this is the case for me, and it’s extremely uncomfortable as I try to go throughout my day. Dandruff is a form of scalp skin condition “seborrheic dermatitis,” but don’t freak out—it isn’t probably isn’t life-threatening, even though it may feel like it.
Your dandruff could have several causes, including:
- Irritated, oily skin
- Dry skin
- A yeastlike fungus that feeds on oils on the scalp
- Sensitivity to hair-care products
- Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema
Jupiter co-founder Robbie, who I’ll formally refer to as the Dandruff Doc (he’s not an M.D.—don’t sue me!) diagnosed me with having “a nasty bout of ol’ fashion dry scalp.” His prescription schedule was as follows:
- Jupiter Balancing Shampoo: 3-4 times per week
- Nourishing Conditioner: Every day (let it soak!)
- Restoring Serum: “If you’re still following the above for a few weeks, but still seeing flakes, apply the serum to your scalp on damp hair every day after showering”
- (Note: the three above products make up The “Triple Threat” Set.)
- Purifying Mask: Only on Sundays, as a treat :)
He also told me that hydration and water intake are key and that I should “buy a big jug and plow through it like it’s a Nintendo game switch.” So take notes if you’re not drinking enough water throughout your day.
After 1 Week of Treatment
At the start of this week, my dandruff was pretty bad. I stopped using my previous CVS-brand treatment because 1. After a few hours post-shower, I would start to see dandruff snow again in the most common scenarios like working on my computer, sitting on the couch, etc. It wasn’t really doing much long-term. And 2. I wanted to take out all the other variables and just focus on my scalp and Jupiter’s products to measure efficacy.
First and foremost, I absolutely look forward to showering now. The hot water (probably not great for already dry skin) combined with a self-conducted head massage is unbeatable after a workout or stressful day. As instructed, I’ve been using the conditioner every day; it’s made with colloidal oatmeal and coconut oil and smells good, like one of those luxurious spas or whatever—I feel like royalty. About every other day I’ll incorporate the sweet-and-minty-smelling shampoo which leaves my hair feeling super silky.
Oh, and to top it off, just for fun, I’ve been using Jupiter’s silly little scalp brush. Mmmm… It’s the little things in life. If you’re reading this and don’t suffer from dandruff, you still need to get one. It’s literally a few bucks but will make your shower/entire life a smidge better no matter what hair products you’re using. Why not?
Anyways, back to the results: I started this test on Monday, and am writing this on Saturday. My dandruff has significantly decreased. Like, just a few specks here and there. If I aggressively scratch my itchy scalp, there are some hairs and pieces of dandruff that will fall, but nothing close to what it was just the other week. My hair also just feels healthier. It’s fuller, stronger, and shinier.
After 2 Weeks of Treatment
While my dandruff was fairly nonexistent after 6 days of the shampoo-conditioner regimen (i.e. it worked good enough for me to highly recommend Jupiter to a fellow Dandruff Club Member), I still wanted to use the Restoring Serum to see if I could completely get rid of my dandruff.
The serum is a medicated leave-on treatment; ingredients include Zinc Pyrithione, which is used to prevent excessive oil buildup (also especially effective for curly hair like mine). Yeah, it works, to say the least. I stuck with the serum for a few days and was entirely dandruff free. Verdict: the serum is powerful.
The Sunday special treat
Dandruff Doc Robbie told me to reserve Jupiter’s Purifying Mask for Sundays. I pinky promised I would, and it’s become a nice treat to relax and prepare for the week. This exfoliant is made with fancy ingredients like volcanic ash for absorbing oil, argan oil for hydration, and biotin for thickness.
One Jupiter customer, Pooja, described the mask: “I use the scalp mask once a week to give my scalp a deep clean. I can literally feel it working, and my hair looks and feels great for days after using it.” I concur.
If you were to follow the same shampoo-conditioner-serum regimen I did, it’d cost you about $65 every two months. That’s fairly pricey to me, but if it works, it works. Also, some of the other brands can run $75-100 for their solutions.
Thank you, Jupiter. My hair and scalp issues have noticeably improved from what they were just a few weeks ago. Now, I’m not worried to rub my noggin around people because I know I’m not going to look like a walking blizzard. It’s given me a small boost of confidence, which is nice because dandruff isn’t some mystery problem now—we have solutions!
