Who among us hasn’t dreamed of being a glamorous gallerist being whisked off to Europe by an international pop star? Anne Hathaway’s latest film The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s bestselling novel, is wish fulfillment at its finest. Hathaway plays Solène (the name alone!), a single mom with a wayward ex-husband and a too cool for school teenage daughter, who captivates Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a thinly-veiled stand-in for Harry Styles. The novel was much more coy about Hayes’ parallels with Styles, but the movie leans in, referencing some of the pop star’s iconic viral moments.
The ensuing romance is pure fantasy, with private jets and candlelit dinners and – of course – Styles-esque cardigan borrowing (Harry, an early adopter of JW Anderson – whose founder just hosted the Met Gala – set the lockdown internet on fire with a TikTok trend recreating his colorblock cardi). But the real wish fulfillment is in getting to project yourself into the character of Solène: Hathaway is funny, stunning, successful, vulnerable, and impeccably dressed – the definition of “Goals.” From Isabel Marant and Chloé to Fendi and Saint Laurent, Solène embodies effortless, French-girl-by-way-of-LA style. While The Idea of You is her highest profile role in years, don’t call it a comeback – Annie never left our hearts, or our screens. Over the past decade, she’s established herself as a red carpet fashion icon and a key collaborator for A-List directors from Todd Haynes to William Oldroyd.
If you found yourself dreaming of Solène’s effortless art world style or wondering how to dress your significant other like Harr – we mean, Hayes – read on for our essential Idea of You style guide.

Solène and Hayes’s chance encounter in a Coachella trailer is instantly iconic, helped by Solène’s cool mom off duty look and Hayes’s signature muscle tee. Toast is our go-to for chic but practical sun hats. The wide brim provides full coverage, and the woven 100% natural palm leaf is sourced from local farm collectives in Mexico.

To get Solène’s professional look, we shopped where the most stylish gallery owners actually go: cult downtown boutique No. 6. They stock a range of gorgeous skirts from a variety of designers, including their own line, but our favorite was this sculptural yet sleek floral midi from Julia Heuer.

In one of the film’s most ripped-from-the-headlines scenes, Solène and Hayes frolic on the beach a la Harry and Olivia Wilde. Anemos makes some of our favorite bikinis, including this skimpy blue triangle top that’s a perfect dupe for Solène’s beach look.

The real star of The Idea of You was definitely Solène’s killer wardrobe. Anne Hathaway took her effortless personal style and translated it to her chic gallery owner character’s lived-in but aspirationally stylish wardrobe.
