Netflix’s latest hit show, The Gentlemen, features all of Guy Ritchie’s signatures: thrilling action scenes, hilarious class commentary, an eye watering amount of creative British cursing, and the best-tailored suits you’ve seen on TV. I devoured the series in its first weekend, becoming one of many fans who launched the show immediately to the #1 spot.
Theo James stars as Eddie, the wayward son of an English duke who gets involved with some unsavory characters in an attempt to save the family estate. It’s got shades of Breaking Bad, but instead of arid Southwestern strip malls, it’s set on a gorgeous English estate. Kaya Scodelario plays Susie Glass, the daughter of crime boss Bobby Glass (played by absolute legend and frequent Guy Richie collaborator, Ray Winstone). Kaya is best known for playing Effie on the original series of Skins, which probably had more sartorial influence on teens in the early 2000s than any other show. Now that her millennial fans are aging into their 30s, Kaya’s back to influence our closets yet again with gorgeous fitted suits and a handbag collection to die for.
Somewhere at the intersection of the newly resurgent preppy look, UK-coded cottage core, and the stealth wealth trend, we can find what I’m calling manor-core. Manor-core is laid back but high end, beautifully tailored but not too fussy. Think Princess Diana going for a stroll, or James Bond on his day off. The Gentlemen’s costumes run the gamut from polos to cozy sweaters to expensive formal wear, in other words the full range of manor-core’s timeless style. I predict there will be a huge resurgence in this kind of bookshelf wealth / English country estate aesthetic after the success of The Gentlemen. Watch your back, American preps. The English gentlemen are coming for your spot.

The Gentlemen star Theo James somehow manages to make a simple button down look incredible. While the corduroy Scotch and Soda shirt he’s wearing is sold out in the US, we’ve tracked down this dupe from Buck Mason that features a similar thin corduroy and golden color.

Every country gentleman needs a Barbour jacket. A staple of both English aristocrats and American preps, Barbour jackets are made to last a lifetime. I love the waxed material of the Ashby, making the coat water resistant. Spotting the iconic tartan lining is a real iykyk sign of stealth wealth.

Another British aristocratic staple is the patched elbow cardigan. This shawl collar wool cardigan from &Sons is a fantastic homage to English country style. I love the sturdy and butter-soft Italian leather elbow patches which give it the look of a favorite family heirloom.

The casual wear is great and all, but where the costumes really shine is the tailoring. This gorgeous three piece worn by Theo James is understated luxury at its finest. While a real Saville Row suit will cost you thousands, Hockerty has this perfect tweed dupe for a little over $500. Hockerty suits are all made to measure, so you can customize your suit for a perfect fit.

The perfect accessory for an American trying to fit in with the English aristocracy? A casually-flung sweater thrown over the shoulder, of course. Buck Mason has us covered once again with their Herdsman sweater – a chunky, waffled wool pullover that would look great on its own or under a tweed suit.

The amazing suits aren’t just for the lads on The Gentlemen. The Lady Sabrina (Joely Richardson) is always dressed to the nines with a drink in hand.
Cordings is a longstanding staple of the English country set. I love this fitted tweed jacket worn by Lady Sabrina later in the series – chic, with pockets. What more could you ask?

Susie Glass is a fashion icon throughout the series, but my favorite look of hers was this luxe red velvet suit. My favorite brand of 2024, Sézane, has a gorgeous cherry red velvet suit that I’ve been lusting over all winter.

And lastly, if you’ve invested in a watch collection to match your tweeds, English luxury accessories house Ettinger has partnered with Netflix on a limited edition accessories collection inspired by The Gentlemen. Each piece is embossed with the Halstead family crest from the series, and is available for custom personalization if you want to add the initials of the Duke or Duchess in your life.
