I can’t believe I’m writing this, but the final season of The Crown premiered this month and the series has officially come to an end. Oh how I’m going to miss getting my fix of fascination with the royal family. Each season was so captivating, I’d have it binged in one day after having waited months for it to come out. And though the story-telling and casting played a big role in making the series so exceptional, as a fashion girly, it was the costuming that really had me hooked.
The costuming department for The Crown hit the nail on the head almost every time, creating near exact replicas of what we’d seen the royals wearing at various points in their lives. From Queen Elizabeth’s elaborate coronation dress and jewel-encrusted crown, down to her floral-adorned wedding dress, the costuming, like most fashion does, really helped to illustrate each character's personality, as well as
the historical context of the time.
The character’s fashion that drew me in the most? Of course, it was Princess Diana. Much like her personality, Diana’s fashion sense was playful, feminine, bold, and always had a way of drawing your attention. It was honestly half the reason I tuned in for seasons 4 and 5. It was fascinating to watch her style evolve, whether it was a true princess moment of her getting all dolled up in a gorgeous gown and jewels, a power suit and kitten heels for a charity event, or one of her many iconic casually-cool outfits (i.e. biker shorts, a sweatshirt, and dad shoes).
With that being said, I narrowed down some of Diana’s best style moments from the Crown to present: The Crown Style Guide.

Taking Revenge
The dress that took the world storm: the infamous revenge dress. I’ve been there before too – wearing a spicy outfit in the hopes it’d maybe make my ex a little jealous. Though I had to do it in hopes he may somehow catch a glimpse of me in a social post, Diana didn’t have to work so hard. One step out of a car was all took for her picture to get taken and plastered everywhere. Diana was a fashion icon much before this dress, but it was definitely one of them that helped seal the deal. While you can opt for almost any LBD as a revenge dress, this one by ML Monique Lhuillier found at Saks Fifth Avenue is one of my favorites. The revenge outfit wouldn’t have been complete without the pearl necklace and black pendant and though there are lots of pearl necklaces out there, I opted for the Princess Diana Pearl Choker from Lord & Taylor to get the exact look – chef’s kiss, so good.

Lady In Red
As you saw with the revenge dress, it was post-royal life when Diana’s style really started to shift to become more mature, more her, and a bit more daring as a grown woman and mother. I have to admire her. I often wear a more comfortable outfit when going on an airplane, but Diana didn’t let a long plane ride stop her from wearing a beautiful dress. In the scene on her way to a summer vacation with William, Harry, and Dodi Al-Fayed, she wore a simple, yet jaw-dropping red dress. I guess when you’re going on a private plane, it’s a little easier to dress up a bit more. Saks Fifth Avenue came through again with a beautiful, form-fitting red dress that even has “princess seams.” Though simple, like an LDB, this dress would make it hard to go out without catching an eye or two. A classic 80s accessory, the dress was paired with a simple, yet striking pair of gold earrings, which are now actually an incredibly popular earring style. I’ve bought earrings from London-based Heaven Mayhem a few times now, and like these, they have many styles Diana would’ve likely worn.
A Moment For The Cheetah Please
Of course on a summer vacation, you’re going to bring out your best and favorite swimsuits and that’s just what Diana did in this scene while on vacation with Dodi al-Fayed in the French Riviera. A coincidence that she wore this on the same day as Camilla Parker Bowles’s 50th birthday party? Maybe not. I love a cheetah print and was excited to see that Khloe Kardashian’s fashion brand Good American had a sexy version of the swimsuit to shop. Much like Diana’s actual look, the cheetah print swimsuit was paired with a sleek pair of black sunglasses with gold detailing. I already had a similar pair for myself but also found an affordable version to shop on Amazon.

French Riviera Vaca? Count Me In
There was no scene that quite said 80s summer vacation quite like the one where Dodi and Diana are walking down stairs in the beautifully scenic French Riviera to say goodbye. Son of the owner of Harrods department store in London, Dodi was bound to have some style too. In the scene, he wore a loose-fitting geometric, beach-style button up top and thanks to Rag and Bone I was able to find a similar style for the men. I loved this black and white moment worn by Diana in the scene and was able to find an incredibly similar tank to shop at Reformation, as well as striped pants by Norma Komali found at Revolve. Ross Simons also had near exact replicas of her chic round gold earrings with a pearl center.
Simplicity In Paris
One of her last looks on the series, this simple and elegant outfit worn by Diana in the scene of her Dodi walking along the Seine River in Paris is actually probably one of my favorite looks of hers on the show. I love how this look mixes high and low – a.k.a. the sparkly embellished dress paired with an oversized blazer and clutch. Abercrombie and Fitch was able to provide a solid dupe of the blazer, while Camila Coelho’s line at Revolve had a great version of the dress. I also loved the simple clutch, which brought the whole outfit together and this Badgley Mischka one will pull several outfits together in the same way.

Smile Because It Happened
As the great Dr. Seuss saying goes, “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Though I’m sad the series has come to an end and I’ll no longer get to see anymore of The Crown’s costuming department’s brilliant takes on Diana’s looks, I’m also smiling for all of the great fashion moments the show gave us. It’s over, but what’ll stick with me is all of the Diana dupes I’ve shopped throughout the series and that is forever – thank goodness. If nothing else, thanks to Diana, it left me a little more stylish than before and I didn’t even know that was possible.
