It’s no secret that Denmark does design well. They have a museum dedicated to it and a city full of shops that bring the Danish design ethos to life for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re strolling Strøget in the center of town or exploring more neighborhoody shopping districts in Nørrebro and Fredericksburg, there’s something for every person at any age on any budget to pack in their suitcase. Just be sure to leave some space, or bring an extra tote bag along.

The Home Body
Hygge—the Danish word to capture a feeling of coziness—is ever present when shopping around Copenhagen. Danish textile brand Tekla recently opened their Copenhagen flagship store, carrying their entire line of luxury sleepwear, towels, and linens. Visiting their store is a study in color and comfort, and it’s hard to leave without something to bring home.
But Hygge extends beyond what you’re wearing or the blanket you’re cozying up in. Snacks are a necessity. While packing cardamom buns from Juno may not be practical, Wally & Whiz winegums pack well and help you bring a taste of Denmark home with you. And look no further than Ferm Living and Studio Arhoj to outfit your coffee table, both of whom have dedicated Copenhagen shops.
The Stylish Kiddo
It’s no secret that I love to shop for my daughter, and I felt like a kid in a candy shop in Copenhagen. But even at 2-years-old, she has strong opinions about what she wears, which I had to bear in mind when I hit the cobblestone streets to shop. After seeing the ubiquitous Wheat quilted jacket on every playground visit, my daughter demanded a “zipper jacket.” Lucky for her, I was able to find one in a lovely dusty pink that’s perfect for her and our Bay Area weather.
Picking barrettes is part of our daily ritual, and I was delighted to find Mimi & Lula at two Danish department stores: Illums Bolighus and Magasin du Nord. They were immediately in rotation on vacation, and add such flair to any kiddo outfit. Ferm Living also offers a full kid’s line, and it’s easy to do some damage at their Copenhagen flagship just across the footbridge from Nyhavn. With more suitcase space, my wallet would have suffered—but some packable decor and toys made the cut.
The Ultimate Accessories
Traveling to any major city comes with a desire to get the look. Copenhagen is home to scores of brands that make it hard to decide where to spend your dollars and what to use your precious suitcase space for. Accessories strike the perfect balance.
Ganni is perhaps Copenhagen’s most known brand. From bags to hats to scrunchies, they offer tons of accessory options that aren’t *too* hard on the wallet and take up minimal space. Cecilie Bahnsen comes with a price tag, but her footwear offers her signature style and color without the volume of her dresses. Walking down the street in Østerbro or Fredericksburg, you’re sure to see a stylish mom wearing an AF Agger jacket. Found at boutiques like Stilleben and Another Nue, these jackets come with a hefty price tag, but their signature waterproof fabric and sturdy construction are designed for biking culture and are sure to withstand years of wear.
Copenhagen is paradise for shopping, and it’s incredibly easy to squeeze in some shops between museum visits and meals. Whether you’re in it for the homewares, kid’s clothing and accessories, or womenswear, Copenhagen offers it all. Just be sure to save some pennies before your trip, leave plenty of suitcase space, and ask for a tax free invoice when you shop in order to get your VAT refund at the airport on the way home.
