Prior to the quick trip I took earlier this month, I was an Austin, Texas novice. In recent years the city has garnered lots of attention, and for good reason. Between a strong sense of Texan pride, a mix of welcoming locals, and a distinct quirky flair, it’s no surprise that Austin has become a featured city in countless “must-visit” travel guides.
My travel schedule only allotted 24 hours in the city that aims to keep itself weird, so I wanted to ensure that my accommodations matched the overall vibe. Nestled into one of Austin’s most desirable neighborhoods of South Congress, the Hotel San José was the perfect combination of modern cowboy chic and boutique hospitality.
Open Air And Light Fare
During the ride from the AUS airport to SoCo, the number of businesses that featured outdoor elements was countless. It was obvious that Austin is best enjoyed al fresco, and the Hotel San José was no exception. Originally built as a roadside motor court hotel in the early 1900s, the property that stands today was thoughtfully re-imagined by hotelier Liz Lambert, and was the principal location for the Bunkhouse Hotel Group, which has received praise for its authenticity in creating curated overnight experiences.
Despite the active nature of South Congress Avenue, the hotel itself remains an oasis of sorts. Enclosed by fig ivy-covered stucco walls, guests are offered a serene escape from the excitement just mere steps away. Interior pathways lead each room to the garden courtyard where guests are welcome to lounge by the intimate pool or enjoy a michelada from the lobby bar with locals and visitors alike.
Let's Snack, Y'all
I was graciously greeted in my room by a cheese plate, marinated olives, and two tall bottles of Topo Chico, all of which can be ordered from the hotel’s courtyard lounge menu, among other bites. Prior to leaving my room to experience Austin’s live music scene, I was able to enjoy a drink from the fully stocked mini-bar inclusive of beverages native to Austin and its surrounding areas. Refreshments comprised of Fairweather Cider, cans of Richard’s Rainwater, Rosé from Tidal Wines, and more. Atop the counter sat a basket full of snacks fit for a Whole Foods fanatic like me, with Tate’s Cookies, Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups, EPIC Provisions, and even a cheeky placement of the quickie pack from Maude for (safe and pleasurable) fun after-hours.

Here For The Amenities
Hotel-provided toiletries can be a bit hit-or-miss, but luckily this was not the case at Hotel San José. After waking from a restful sleep snuggled between 300-thread count sheets, I was elated by the product lineup found within the light-filled bathroom. There is something to be said about a hotel shower that is fully stocked with products that have earned a regular spot in my personal medicine cabinet.
Using body wash, shampoo, and conditioner from Malin + Goetz left me feeling refreshed and pampered. This brand has created a luxury feel by taking a minimalistic approach to creating their “less-is-more” skincare products, and it shows. After finishing off my self-care routine with the vitamin b5 body lotion, I settled into a unique kimono robe that was custom designed for the hotel, going about the remainder of my morning in comfort.
Make A Stop At The Gift Shop
The lobby shop within the Hotel San José featured an array of products to bolster the travels of their guests. Packing always brings out my forgetful side, and there are certain items that are a must when taking on the Austin heat. Luckily, it felt like the San José anticipated my negligence when it came to packing accessories for spending time in the sun, given the collection of Mondo Mondo scents and various Raen sunglass frames available for purchase. Additionally, organic insect repellent in either incense or spray was the finishing touch to make relaxing on my suite’s porch as comfortable as ever.
If there’s one thing about me, it's that I love a good souvenir. When I was younger, stopping at the hotel’s gift shop before departure was non-negotiable. Collecting mementos such as keychains, t-shirts, and fridge magnets is a practice that I’ve carried into adulthood, so I always appreciate when I’m presented with a more curated selection of keepsakes to choose from. Items that felt like I could take a piece of the hotel home with me included a worn-in San José Tee from Filth Mart, custom duvet covers that are found atop all guest beds, and my personal favorite: a brass stamped keychain that mirrored the one found on the room key I received upon check-in.

My time spent at the Hotel San José was a getaway fit for a cowgirl and it’s needless to say that just one day was simply not enough – never before had I stayed in a hotel that so closely embodied the spirit of the city where it resided. The next time you find yourself in the Lone Star State’s capital, I implore you to make your way to the San José.
