It’s been seven years since I lived in New York City, yet my shoulders still haven’t quite forgiven me for the mornings and evenings spent schlepping my entire life on my three-train commute. The culprit was a very well-loved leather tote bag—she was beautiful, versatile, and roomy enough to house all the accouterments of my 70-hour work week. Looping 15 pounds of laptop, notebooks, and lunch around one side of my body inevitably took its toll, but the work backpacks I perused at the time never seemed to pass the outfit test. (And let’s just say that as an early twenty-something, my bar for practicality was considerably lower.)
My locale and priorities have since shifted—but I’m pleased to report that the selection of functional and stylish work backpacks has, too. I now have my pick between leather, suede, and canvas fabrics, a rainbow of hues (although I’m partial to a classic black backpack), and straps that handily transform their cargo from backpack to tote bag to cross-body purse. Great news for me—although maybe a little less business for my chiropractor.
No matter what your commute currently looks like in our post-pandemic world, kick off the new year with one of the versatile options below.
