As someone who takes pride in being a thoughtful gift-giver, the wedding registry is something of an affront. A set of white towels, a stand mixer, a six-slice toaster—where’s the wow factor? Sure, the registry is an act of mercy to those who are stumped by gifts (or for those who barely know the couple), but I take such joy in dreaming up just the perfect thing that I’m guilty of going off-registry more often than not.
I love finding something that is tailored to the couple’s interests, whether that be a love of animation or cycling or making their own pasta. When they’re unwrapping a sea of homewares and struggling to think of something meaningful to say in their thank you notes (We will think of you every time we drink water in these glasses), it’ll be such a happy surprise to tear open a from-the-heart present.
Word to the wise: If you choose to go off-registry, it better be for good reason. The best reason is that you thought of a gift that the special couple will fall in love with. But if you happen to know that the newlyweds could really benefit from knives and wine glasses, spring for those and maybe go with one of the smaller token gifts from this list that won’t force you to choose between functional and fun. Happy gifting!

Personalized
It might take a few weeks (or months) of advance planning, but you will top the Best Guest rankings with a personalized gift that speaks to the couples’ shared history or their new life together.
Instead of a generic set of mugs from Le Creuset, commission a pair of these one-of-a-kind vessels from Dustin Yager. Including the everyday moments (buy matcha, walk Fido) from your friends’ lives will make them feel so loved.

You can certainly go with the gorgeous floral or cute animal designs, but the beauty of Felix Doolittle’s selection is how specific you can get. For your favorite self-care gurus: crystals. For the gardener in your life: heirloom veggies. The new Fort Greene residents deserve the Brooklyn Bridge and your scientist friends will love the naturalist set. It’s a beautiful way to launch a new last name (or new address) and celebrate the quotidian togetherness of a shared return address label.

How adorable are custom couple's aprons for cooking up Sunday brunch at home? You can personalize each apron with up to fourteen characters in 30 thread color options. If you know the couple like that, you could even opt to embroider their pet names (Pookie??) for each other.

If you want to give something that pays homage to the newlywed's special bond, consider this gorgeous series of illustrations. Send along pictures of the major landmarks of their relationship (the bar they met, the proposal destination, their first home together) and they’ll be converted into a piece of art they’ll cherish forever.

Experiences
Not every gift is something that can be wrapped — a present that leaves them with a beautiful memory is better than any linen or dish set.
Signing up for a weeks-long ceramics class on someone else’s behalf is too much of a commitment—but a stay-at-home date night for the post-honeymoon era is a much more reasonable crafty gift. The newlyweds can bond over a DIY project that will also serve as a centerpiece on their dining room table — even better if it’s present for their first dinner party as a married couple.

This one lands somewhere between an experience and a subscription (coming up next). The couple that loves reading may not have the same taste in books, so gift them this session that will set them up with personalized reading picks tailored to their distinct preferences. They’ll each get a 30-minute consultation with an expert at the Center for Fiction and twelve books that are shipped over the course of a year. Think of it as an elevated Book of the Month Club.

American Museum of Natural History
American Museum of Natural History Membership
Pick a local museum (or gallery) that your favorite couple frequents a few times a year. As someone partial to the butterfly vivarium at the AMNH, I’ve gotten plenty of use out of my annual membership and it’s a great rainy weekend activity.

Subscriptions
After the hubbub of the wedding, remind them of this special time in their lives with a monthly gift.
Florals are one of my favorite parts of a wedding and you can keep the botanical spirit alive long after the event by gifting a bouquet subscription that features the happy couple’s central flower. Choose from seasonal blooms like Hydrangea, Gerber Daisies, Mini Calla Lilies, and more.

The couple who spritzes together, stays together. As long as they don’t have a sacrosanct signature scent, this sampler of perfumes and colognes will give the newlyweds a chance to experiment. Each delivery includes three feminine and three masculine scents.

Whether you’re sending a special something to a couple who eloped or making a statement with a highly original, off-registry gift, the most important thing is that you can picture the excited faces of the two recipients unwrapping it.
