The trends first spotted on the runway at Fashion Week — from New York to Paris — set the tone for our wardrobes six months ahead. And judging from this season’s shows, we’ll have plenty of wearable silhouettes to work with — all of which are incredibly eye-catching and a touch more experimental than the quiet luxury aesthetic popularized in recent history.
The most prominent look from brands that consistently serve covetable workwear is the Bermuda shorts suit. Teamed with leather knee-high boots at The Row and Helmut Lang, styled with work shirts at Tibi and Carolina Herrera, and updated in patent leather with a scalloped trim at Tory Burch, the cut feels frankly just as polished as a pair of tailored, ankle-length trousers. But it also leaves room for a shoe moment and invites the wearer to play with proportions.
Meanwhile, overly-exaggerated asymmetrical dresses and floor-skimming maxi skirts are two silhouettes that feel fresh in the trend cycle, and provide a welcome change from the micro-mini hemline that’s taken hold for seasons now.
Fringe is also making a comeback, but it emits glamorous undertones rather than Western vibes. Seen in abundance at 3.1 Phillip Lim, LAPOINTE, Tanya Taylor, Prabal Gurung, and Proenza Schouler, the detail feels like less of an embellished afterthought and more of the moment, appearing in bushels of soft threads to add volume or comprising a full skirt or pant leg to command attention.
As for the obligatory questions a shopper asks at the first sign of fall — What coat should I buy? What colors should I wear? — we have answers. Those who typically construct a one-and-done outfit with just a long jacket will be pleased to add a “scarf coat” to their closet, a design with an affixed wrap that sweeps over the shoulders and drapes around the body to provide extra warmth. And the color palette here quite literally screams autumn, with shades like scarlet, rust, mustard-yellow, plum, and dark brown taking over in a big way.
Ahead, we introduce you to the six fall/winter 2024 runway trends we tracked at New York Fashion Week.

Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Bermuda-Length Suits
The Bermuda-length suit, seen at Vince, Tory Burch, Helmut Lang, Monse, Tibi, Carolina Herrera, and The Row, will be a fall season staple for fashion enthusiasts. The cut, whether boxy or slim fit, leather or wool, allows for a shoe rotation to completely transform your look each time you wear it. Try meeting the hemline with tall boots, or style your shorts with sheer tights and pumps.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Asymmetrical Dresses
While one-shoulder minidresses can readily be considered “asymmetrical,” we’re noticing more of an exaggerated mismatch by way of architecturally stimulating designs. At Proenza Schouler, Alaïa, and Ulla Johnson, one arm is left completely bare of fabric while the other is engulfed in material. And at Jason Wu and Tanya Taylor, the necklines are glaringly off-kilter. Play up one of these dresses by pulling back your hair or ensuring a completely visible neckline.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Opulent Fringe
While the term “fringe” might conjure images of Western-inspired leather jackets and cowboy boots, the opulent fringe on the fall 2024 runways strikes a glamorous tone. There’s no doubt you’ll find the embellishment on many a cocktail dress, and there’s a certain elegance that comes with incorporating it into a head-to-toe monochrome moment.

Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Wrap Coats
Whether you call them scarves, wraps, sashes, or shawls, the “coat with something extra” this season is affixed with an extension of fabric that brings the drama in one fell swoop. This outerwear moment functions as a one-and-done outfit and even doubles as added protection — both from chilling winds and revealing whatever you’ve got on underneath.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Full-Length Maxi Skirts
It feels rather ironic that we’ve gone from flirty micro-minis to full, floor-length skirts, but here we are. At Khaite and Proenza Schouler, these designs were folded over at the waistband, seemingly nodding to yoga pants from the early aughts. And at Altuzarra and Tanya Taylor, they were comprised of pleats begging for motion. Whether you opt for one in cashmere, leather, or denim, what you wear with it will determine the aesthetic you’re going for, as maxi skirts are versatile enough to fit into anyone’s wardrobe.

Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Autumnal Tones
You won’t easily forget the fall 2024 color palette. Think of the moment in September when the leaves start to change, and there you have the season’s hottest shades — chocolate brown, golden mustard, berry wine, scarlet, and rust all reign supreme, with Siriano’s lineup debuting first to immediately set the mood. The designer presented his collection at The Plaza Hotel, and the finale culminated with all models posing together on the runway, proving just how complementary these hues can be in a well-rounded wardrobe.
