For guys, t-shirts are everything. They’re our sun, our moon and our stars. Obviously everyone can (and should) wear t-shirts, but for men, a t-shirt embodies our personalities in a strangely specific way. It’s like a lunchbox of our lives. You can learn a lot about a man by the brand of t-shirt he’s wearing.
The last tee to have the menswear world in a chokehold came courtesy of Carmy on FX’s hit show, The Bear. Produced by Merz b. Schwanen, it is a great t-shirt deserving of its flowers just as tees are from brands like James Perse and Buck Mason. As you might have guessed though, we are not here to talk about those t-shirts.
Today we are gathered around the proverbial fire pit to talk about the horse I would pick if choosing the right shirt was a race (it is a race.) That brand is Lady White Co. and that t-shirt is the epitome of knit cotton bliss…
Born in Los Angeles
I strolled into Lady White Co.’s Silverlake location on a sweltering early September day unannounced. While I had recently told extremely chill owners Phil and Taylor that I’d be writing this piece, I felt a more raw conversation with an associate would fit the vibe. I asked the friendly dude named Roman a simple question: “What makes your t-shirts so great?” His response was both pleasantly obvious and distinctly nuanced.
He began with the fit and the fabric being top notch, qualities that from my perspective, are table stakes for any great t-shirt. Roman then went on to say how intentional the brand is about everything they do, from their store build outs to the way they treat their people. He waxed about how great of a place it was to work and how true the brand is to their core values around quality and design. There was a genuine passion in his tone that is felt the moment you step into either of Lady White’s Los Angeles based retail footprints. You can truly feel the care this team puts into their work.
A Crowded Space
As consumers we’re inundated with so many choices when it comes to what we should buy. This mighty purchasing power is not without its challenges—as Uncle Ben from Spiderman says, “With great power comes great responsibility!” It’s a bit cliche to echo the idea that we vote with our money but it’s also simply true. It’s a truth I strongly believe in when it comes to choosing which brands to support. Sure a t-shirt at Abercrombie might be fine and affordable but is a company valued at 6.7 billion really the one you want to support? For a one-off Coachella button down, sure. For a tried and true daily driver tee, no thank you!
It is with that in mind that Lady White clicks. Because that product confidence (through some form of osmosis) travels from the people behind the brand to the person wearing it. Phil and Taylor really care about what they’re putting out in the world. From the fabric sourcing to the ethical local production. When you die are you going to be stoked that you propped up a massive conglomerate to save a few bucks or that you supported inspiring creatives looking to make the world a more elegant and thoughtful place? When phrased like that, Lady White Co. is an absolute no brainer.
How I Lady White
My pièce de résistance at Lady White is their “Lite Jersey Tee” and judging by the current available sizing on their site, I am not alone in this affection. However, I couldn’t write an entire story on a brand's t-shirts while only owning one style. So I did the only logical thing someone in my shoes would do and after a great chat with Roman, copped a two pack of their most popular “Our T-Shirt” – one white and one black for posterity. I absolutely love them and know you will too.
