It’s rare that an object or person enters your life and immediately unlocks a new, resonating perspective on how you view your home or creative practice, but that is exactly what happened when I first encountered Tsu Lange Yor’s fragrances. Founded in 2023 by musician and actor Troye Sivan and his brother Steele Mellet, Tsu Lange Yor is an independent fragrance company with scents for the home and body, or, as they put it, for “self and sanctuary.” Named after the Yiddish saying “to long years,” the up-and-coming brand is defined both by their highly emotional, intimate fragrances and by their strong commitment to collaborating with some of the most exciting visual artists in Australia. I can’t think of another fragrance project that has emerged with such a fully formed style right out the gate.
Tsu Lange Yor feels of a piece with the rest of Troye’s recent creative work: confident, unique, deeply emotive, and with a rich sense of place. Last summer, I was lucky enough to receive their aluminum oil burner, designed in collaboration with Australian sculptor Joel Adler. Since then, lighting the burner has become the center of both my morning writing ritual and my evening wind down. Their three home scents are invigorating but nostalgic, evoking in turn lush romance, smoky mystery, and a verdant, effervescent sense of play. In my opinion all three are instant classics.
One of my favorite memories of last year was gathering with loved ones at my house for a holiday party full of food and dancing. As the party was winding down, my friends sprawled out on my couch and floor, happy, exhausted, completely themselves. One person struck a match and another held out a candle as I tapped fragrant oil onto my aluminum Tsu Lange Yor burner. I watched the flicker of the candle reflected across the burner’s steepled legs, and realized this scent would always remind me of being surrounded by my chosen family in that moment, creating a new tradition together. That is a gift that a truly great scent can give us: an instant feeling of warmth and home, no matter where we may find ourselves in the future.

For Sanctuary
I immediately took to Tsu Lange Yor’s signature scent, developed with Craig Andrade. TLY 5755 is full of honeyed spice, loamy forest floor, and black pepper. It’s at once invigorating, entrancing, and completely seductive. And after using it so often, it now smells like home.

Pool is the most surprising and evocative scent in the range, immediately transporting you to a green summer garden. My favorite smell in the world is tomato leaf, and Pool has that same fresh herbaceousness, mixed with salty ocean air and a hint of summer berry.

The third scent in the range for home is Sassafras – a sensual bonfire that makes me think simultaneously of a dimly lit dancefloor, a walk through the woods at twilight, and burning incense at the altar of an old stone church. Impossible to forget.

Tsu Lange Yor’s head of design, Joel Adler, is known for his site specific installations that often feature elements that reflect or refract light. This oil burner feels like one of his sculptures in miniature – a beautiful, hand cast installation that has become my favorite object in my home. You tap a few drops of Tsu Lange Yor’s burner blend into the upper cradle and then light a tea candle on the base element to gently heat and diffuse the fragrance.

For Self
Tsu Lange Yor also offers a range of perfumes in sculptural bottles that recall the reflective qualities of their aluminum oil burner. Their signature TLY 5755 eau de parfum is at the absolute top of my wish list for my upcoming birthday. Sexy, unique, and unforgettable, there’s something so familiar about it, the olfactory equivalent of having a name at the tip of your tongue. I have a feeling this stems from their use of Tasmanian Mountain Pepper – a first for any fine fragrance.

Between the brand’s beautiful scents, strong sense of place and community, and dedication to finding exciting artists to develop the brand’s visual style, Tsu Lange Yor is another triumph for Troye and his team. After a sold-out run of an innovative hand-cast brass bowl and a successful pop up in New York, Tsu Lange Yor seems to be in a constant state of exploration and expansion. We are so excited to sample whatever the new Australian kings of fragrance have coming next.
