We Tried Two Popular Air-Dried Dog Foods—But My Pup Only Loves One Of Them

We like

We don't like

As a dog mom, I acknowledge that I can be a bit obsessive about my pup. Whether it’s choosing the coziest bed, the safest chew toys, or, most importantly, the healthiest food, I’m big into research. But navigating the world of dog food can be overwhelming. Kibble feels outdated, raw diets are messy and time-consuming, and fresh food subscriptions can be expensive and inconvenient. That’s why I started looking into air-dried food.

A happy medium between fresh and kibble, air-dried food retains high-quality nutrients while still offering convenience. The air-drying process entails removing moisture at very low temperatures, so that air-dried food retains more of its naturally-present nutritional value than cooked foods. A meat-based air-dried dog food actually has the same health benefits as raw dog food, which is what dogs would naturally eat. It’s just more lightweight and shelf stable.

Two of the most popular brands using this method are Sundays For Dogs and Spot & Tango, so I was curious to try them both out and see how they stack up. Here’s the scoop…

Quality & Ingredients

Both brands seem to go above and beyond here – especially compared to their kibble competitors!

Sundays For Dogs: Sundays For Dogs dog food is human-grade, and made without any fillers or synthetics. Something I’ve appreciated from the jump about the brand is that you can see exactly what’s in each recipe directly on their website. Not only does it explain that Sundays is: 91% beef muscle and organs, 5% fruits and vegetables, and 4% seeds and grains – the brand also includes a full ingredient list.

Sundays For Dogs offers three recipes (Beef, Chicken, and Turkey), and their USDA Beef Dog Food, for example, is made of: Beef, Beef Heart, Beef Liver, Beef Bone, Quinoa, Pumpkin, Fish Oil, Sunflower Oil, Zucchini, Kale, Flaxseed, Salt, Parsley, Dried Kelp, Dried Chicory Root, Turmeric, Mixed Tocopherols, Ginger, Selenium Yeast, Blueberries, Carrots, Apples, Tomatoes, Shiitake Mushrooms, Broccoli, Oranges, Cranberries, Spinach, Beets, Cherries, Strawberries, and…that’s all!

Spot & Tango: According to Spot & Tango’s site, Unkibble is also human-grade and made with whole food ingredients. The brand claims that Unkibble uses fresh, whole ingredients, real meats only, and no artificial additives, colors or flavors. It’s also available in three recipes: Beef + Barley, Turkey + Potato, and Cod + Salmon.

Their Beef + Barley recipe is made of: Beef, Barley, Flax Seeds, Carrots, Green Beans, Beef Livers, Beef Hearts, Beets, Cranberries, S&T Nutrient Blend, Rosemary, Salt, Dried Kelp, Mixed Tocopherols.

I’m not a vet, but the one thing that stands out to me is that Unkibble has an added nutrient blend with a much longer ingredient list (Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Safflower Oil to name a few of the 30+ ingredients). Included in that blend are some of the functional ingredients included in Sundays For Dogs (pumpkins and blueberries, for example) – and I’m not sure why they’re included in a nutrient blend vs. the actual ingredients in the ingredient list. Again, I’m not a vet, but I found their ingredient list to be more confusing and less straightforward than Sundays’.

Convenience & Storage

One of the biggest appeals of air-dried food is that it’s shelf-stable and easy to serve—no scooping out cold, wet food or dealing with messy thawing.

Sundays For Dogs: Arrives ready to pour straight from the bag with no prep required. The texture is soft and easy to break into smaller pieces if needed. I’ve also been so impressed by the delivery time – Sundays is a breeze!

Spot & Tango: Unkibble is similarly convenient – portion out this air-dried food with a scoop, and dinner is served! One small thing I’ve noted is that it takes a bit longer to ship/arrive, so be sure to plan accordingly. When I researched to see if this was normal, I found that it was (in addition to several people upset with their customer service, if that’s important to you).

Taste & Palatability

At the end of the day, my dog’s opinion matters most. And while she ate both, her enthusiasm for Sundays was unmatched.

Sundays For Dogs: The soft, jerky-like texture makes this dog food feel like a treat rather than dog food. My dog literally cannot get enough of this stuff. Mealtime is a breeze, she has a lot of energy, her coat is shiny, and it keeps her very regular. We’re both happy campers here.

Spot & Tango: My pup enjoyed this dog food for the first week or so, but I noticed that her excitement waned in the following weeks. While the recipes seem to be pretty similar, there must be something different about the taste (I admittedly haven’t summoned up the courage to try it myself quite yet). I also noticed that she was gassier after eating Unkibble (specifically the Cod + Salmon flavor) but didn’t have any major issues otherwise.

Cost & Value

Premium dog food comes at a price – and you get what you’re paying for!

Sundays For Dogs: It’s always tough to generalize on price when it comes to dog food because everything depends on your dog – their breed, size, height, etc. When I took Sunday’s survey for my dog specifically, her plan came out to $2.65/meal.

Spot & Tango: When I took Spot & Tango’s quiz, they unfortunately didn’t have my dog’s breed so I put something similar. The plan it generated came out to about $2.20 per meal.

Final Verdict: Sundays For Dogs For The Win!

After weighing all the factors—quality, convenience, taste, and value—Sundays For Dogs is my top pick. It’s as close to fresh food as you can get in a dry format, packed with nutrient-dense, human-grade ingredients, and incredibly easy to serve. Plus, my dog goes wild for it.

If you’re looking for a premium, air-dried dog food that offers top-tier nutrition without the mess, Sundays is my clear choice. Ready to upgrade your pup’s meals?
