Living sustainably is important to me, and like many of you, I try to do my best to reduce packaging, buy in bulk, and buy more eco-friendly products. However, too often products that are healthier for the planet don’t actually work the way we’re accustomed to (cue my husband complaining about my latest dishwasher detergent which “does nothing!”). That’s why I was so excited to discover Grove Collaborative, a new website that curates over 150 sustainable and high-performing brands, ensuring you’ll never have to choose between a clean home and a clean planet again. Read on for a roundup of my favorite essentials from The Grove.
Wool Dryer Balls
Swapping out dryer sheets for dryer balls is the oldest trick in the book, and something I’d been wanting to do forever as traditional dryer sheets are not only wasteful, but typically full of toxic chemicals. Truth be told, these wool dryer balls ($17.99 for 3) have been a total game changer – they get the job done and more. Made from 100% New Zealand wool, they eliminate wrinkles and reduce drying time by properly separating clothes in the dryer. I prefer them unscented, but you can add a few drops of essential oil (this one seems particularly nice) if you like a spa-like finish.
Silicone Straws
Another easy swap! While there is something nostalgic about drinking a fountain soda with a plastic straw, these silicone straws ($8.99 for 4) are a much more sustainable choice. They’ve become a staple in our house for everything from smoothies to cold brew. I especially love that they come with a little carrying pouch so you’ll never be without a straw – and they’re dishwasher safe!
Clear The Air Toilet Spray
Move over Febreeze…there’s a new toilet spray in town. Seriously though, is there anything worse than the smell of fake air freshener? Just thinking about it makes me nauseous. That’s why I was over-the-moon excited when I found Grove’s Clear The Air toilet spray ($9.99). The subtle scent is just enough to guarantee your bathroom always smells fresh, but not overwhelmingly so. This spray is made with nontoxic ingredients, and it’s actually recommended that you use it before going to the bathroom to eliminate all potential odors.
Hydrating Hand Soap
Another eco-friendly trick I’ve been trying out is to purchase hand soap in bulk rather than buying a new container every time I run out. With the frequency at which our family washes our hands these days, this trick saves a ton of unnecessary packaging and means there’s always extra soap on hand. Recently, I’ve been loving this hydrating hand soap ($5.99) which is way more cost effective than drugstore options. Plus, it’s infused with aloe, made with 100% natural fragrance, and comes in recyclable packaging.
Organic Cotton Hair Towel
I’ll admit, I hate blow drying my hair, so this swap may have been easier for me than most. But, I do have very thick and long hair so I need some sort of drying mechanism (going to bed with wet hair is not an option). Enter this super absorbent hair towel ($14.99). Made with 100% organic cotton, this towel dries hair naturally while taming frizz and doesn’t cause breakage or split ends (yep, sign me up!!). It’s super comfortable and easy to use – I throw it on after the shower while I do my makeup, make breakfast, etc., and find that my hair is almost fully dry in about an hour. A must have for busy moms!
If you’re passionate about making sustainable swaps, but don’t know where to start, Grove Collaborative is your first stop. I’ve been super impressed with all of the brand’s products and can’t wait to continue trying new ones. Check out my picks and more here.
