An Exercise in Rinse and Repeat: Refreshing My Husband’s Shower Routine

The best place to start, I figured, was at the top of the shower – literally. We’re in the process of renovating our home, which unfortunately means that the showerhead in our primary bath is many, many years old. Frankly, I don’t even want to know what kind of gross build-up is in it. For a quick aesthetic fix and for a cleaner shower, I replaced our shower head with hai’s Smart Bluetooth Shower Head. It instantly helped transform it into a more spa-like experience, as well as inform him with custom light colors when the temperature is right and when he’s reached his target water usage. As a constant worrier about our utility bills, this feature really excites him.

I reached out to his childhood best friend for support in finding a few more products, who immediately understood the challenge I was up against. This friend has a memorably well-stocked shower, so I trusted his recommendations. One of my favorites he recommended was a scalp massager. My husband loves massages, so I figured if he can massage his own scalp, we’ll both be happier humans. This one from Tooletries was one of the few I found that wasn’t pink – and it comes with a handy hook to hold it.  He really didn’t end up being a fan of this one. Nothing against the product or the brand, but he just viewed the massager as extraneous.

I think I was most excited for Avery to try Huron because it was going to be the primary replacement for his 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash. He tried Huron’s Fave Four Bundle, which includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and deodorant. In the nearly 5 years I’ve known him, I have never seen him use a conditioner, largely because he felt he didn’t need it and that it smelled “girly.” Huron’s scents designed specifically for men, as well as the simple bottle and branding, have him using conditioner for the first time ever. It’s a MIRACLE. Also, at $59 for the whole bundle, the brand has accomplished selling luxury products at a reasonable price, which is really important to my husband. It’s safe to say Huron’s not going anywhere in this house. He recently had a friend over who showered at our house and he asked me to “get the good stuff” for his friend, referring to Huron’s bundle.

No male shower routine is complete without a good shave. My husband has been eyeing Bevel’s Shave Kit for a while, but hasn’t pulled the trigger on it… so I did. This kit includes pre-shave gel, shave cream, post-shave balm, a brush, 40 blades, as well as a safety razor. After shaving with it, he came out of the bathroom and said “Wow, this is the closest shave I’ve ever gotten!” He also really enjoyed the minty-fresh feel his face had afterwards. I’m not sure if he’ll always follow all of the steps included in the shave kit, but I sure hope he does. I much prefer kissing a clean-shaven face!

In my humble opinion, every shower routine should be capped with a well-made bed. Yeah, making the bed is important, but in order to not undo all the stuff we just did, your bed must have great sheets and a comforter. I didn’t go full-on with new sheets for this experiment, but I did get a new duvet cover from Sijo. While he’s relatively acne-free, Sijo’s Eucalyptus Duvet Cover will help him stay that way, as it helps to minimize nighttime sweat.
