In partnership with Rascal + Friends.
Before becoming a mom, I genuinely thought all diapers were alike. I thought the TV ads showing moisture-wicking were goofy and that the materials couldn’t differ that much between brands. After all, a diaper is a diaper, right?
Finally, after one too many 2 am diaper changes for my toddler, I decided to give changing our diapers a go. In researching what was out there, I was both underwhelmed and overwhelmed by the selection. I was overwhelmed by the number of choices, but underwhelmed by the number of premium diapers at a price that didn’t make me sick. Even familiar brands felt expensive, and I had the feeling they were chock full of chemicals.

Getting to Know Rascal + Friends
After a little bit of searching, I discovered Rascal + Friends, a premium diaper brand sold at Walmart. The brand promises exceptional diapers at a price that parents can afford. Rascal + Friends is 26.6 cents per size 4 diaper, while other leading brands (like Huggies + Pampers) run you between 37 and 38 cents per diaper. Designed by parents with fellow parents in mind, the Rascal + Friends diaper has years of engineering behind it. These parents seriously tried to think of everything when designing the diaper of their dreams, including withstanding wiggles, crawling, and climbing. Beyond durability, they set out to make the diapers ultra “feather-soft” and unbelievably absorbent.
In my search for the perfect diaper, absorbency was key. I did, after all, believe that lack of absorbency was the main reason my toddler was waking up in the middle of the night. But as a self-described “scrunchy” mom, my scrunchy side was unwilling to compromise on the makeup of the diaper. I had heard that some brands used harsh chemicals and dyes in their diapers to wick away the moisture, and I was not willing to go there. Rascal + Friends met my scrunchy standards, as they are made with no “nasties” (no lotions, latex, or fragrances) and only feature premium materials. If you’re looking for the certifications to prove it, Rascal + Friends is Glyphosate-Free Certified and has been dermatologist tested. Having checked all my boxes, I got myself a box and was ready to give these diapers a go.

The True Test of Poo
Before I share the dirty details (literally) of how these diapers stack up, it’s worth talking about how you buy these. To be perfectly honest, while I love getting stuff straight to my door, I despise paying for shipping. I hate paying for shipping so much, that for the right product, I’ll pack up my kiddo, the diaper bag full of snacks, and go to the store. The fact that Rascal + Friends are available at Walmarts everywhere is so convenient. Run out of diapers? Head to Walmart. Kid outgrew the diapers overnight? Head to Walmart. On vacation? Head to Walmart. With Walmarts literally everywhere, this convenience of going in anytime, anywhere is king.
The very first thing that happened when I brought the box home was that my toddler couldn’t stop looking and touching the box. We got the CoComelon Print that has amazing limited edition prints of JJ + friends – and let me tell you, he was all about it. Having used a certain bulk retailer’s diapers before, these were much more interesting to his sweet mind. Even changing him, he was staring at the adorable little prints on the diapers instead of squirming around. Personally, I’m not big on dressing my kids in character stuff (sue me), but who cares if it’s going on his butt under pants!
OK, now onto the nitty gritty – I told you I was going there. From an aborbency standpoint, these diapers stand up to both the test of #1 and #2. Since making the switch, our kiddo woke up once during one night and then was able to self-soothe back to sleep, which tells us that the pee had been wicked away enough from him that he felt comfortable. Our kiddo is a heavy drinker (of water), so the fact that this diaper can handle his overnights is a big deal.
As for “stinky poo poo,” we’ve had 0 leaks… blessed. Though his poops are mostly solid, there is the occasional squishy day. Thankfully, with Rascal + Friends and their snug, stretchy highback waistband and double leak guards, all hazardous materials have been safely contained inside the diaper. If you’ve had leaks before… you know this is a good day for a parent. The tabs also seem to do a good job of staying on, even when I take a quick peek. That being said, they are noticeably harder than other brands. They’ve not affected our son, but I can see how the lack of softness might be a downside for some parents. What the tabs lack in softness, the actual part that touches the butt is immensely softer than other brands we’ve tried.
“Wipe Out” Harsh Chemicals
We also decided to try the baby wipes Rascal + Friends offers. While there are two options (the Sensitive Baby Wipes & Easy Clean Baby Wipes), I opted for the Sensitive Wipes. With 0% fragrance, a thick cloth (no gross tears), and plant extracts to soothe the skin, I figured it was worth a go. After purchasing, I learned that the design is such that only one wipe comes out at a time. For me, this was actually my biggest grievance with baby wipes from other brands – I could never get just one out and I felt extremely wasteful. The one-at-a-time design actually works and we are saving so much money – and the planet! They work well and we typically only need 1-2, depending on the type of stuff we’re looking at. Though his booty is pretty stable at this point, I’m planning on using these on our newborn due in November.
Besides the wipes and premium diapers, the brand also offers training pants. We’re just about to start potty training, so knowing we can stick with the same brand that he loves will be all the more helpful as we enter this transition.
