Tucked away in the vibrant Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Nine Orchard Hotel is a luxurious refuge that masterfully blends the rich history of its surroundings with the sophistication of modern design. Occupying a former bank building that dates back to the 1920s, this boutique hotel has quickly become a go-to destination for travelers seeking an experience that is equal parts classic New York charm and contemporary elegance.
When our Editorial Director checked in for a late summer stay, he was thoroughly impressed with the personal touches and generous warm hospitality he received from every interaction at the property. Nine Orchard immerses you in a world where past and present coexist in perfect harmony, and his visit happened to be overlapping the buzzy premiere of Max’s Industry Season 3 Premiere party at the property. A clear reminder that Nine Orchard is very much at the tip of the spear of New York’s cultural zeitgeist right now.
A Thoughtful Restoration
The building that now houses the Nine Orchard Hotel was once the Jarmulowsky Bank, a Beaux-Arts gem that served as a financial institution for the city’s burgeoning immigrant population in the early 20th century. The hotel’s meticulous restoration honors this history, preserving many of the original architectural details while introducing a fresh, modern aesthetic.
First impressions are jaw dropping as you enter the grand lobby, with its soaring ceilings, marble floors, and ornate moldings. It’s very likely you’ve seen the highly Instagramable Swan Room with its high ceilings and impeccable interior design on various tastemaker social media feeds. It’s a great example of cherishing the opulence of the building’s past while combining contemporary furnishings and art to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The Swam Room is an ideal spot to enjoy a quiet breakfast (included in our room rate) in the morning or a buzzy aperitivo with friends to kick start the evening.
One of the most striking aspects of Nine Orchard is how seamlessly it blends the old with the new. The hotel’s designers have made a conscious effort to preserve the building’s historical integrity, from the carefully restored façade to the original bank vaults repurposed as unique seating areas. Yet, they have also incorporated sleek, modern touches, such as custom-designed furniture and state-of-the-art amenities, that make the hotel feel decidedly of-the-moment.
Rooms (and Tunes) with a View
Nine Orchard offers a variety of room types, each thoughtfully designed to provide a luxurious and comfortable stay. The rooms range from cozy studios to expansive suites, all featuring high ceilings, large windows, and a neutral color palette that enhances the sense of space and light. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the design, from the plush bedding and high-end toiletries to the carefully curated artwork and custom furniture.
One of the standout features of the rooms at Nine Orchard is the breathtaking views of the city. Depending on the room, guests can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Lower East Side, the Manhattan skyline, or the iconic Williamsburg Bridge. The large windows not only flood the rooms with natural light but also offer a constant reminder of the hotel’s prime location in one of New York’s most dynamic neighborhoods.
Perhaps my favorite touch of all in the room was the bespoke stereo system and music program unique to the hotel. Each room at Nine Orchard is outfitted with custom-made Ojas speakers and amplifiers programmed with four New York-inspired stations. There was something magical about the analog nature of these speakers, complete with the four curated stations that offered an audiophile like me a whimsical musical discovery during my stay. It felt like I was living in a pre Spotify Discover Weekly era, where humans were hand selecting the sounds of each channel to compliment your stay.
One final note on the in-room experience: a generous complimentary mini-bar policy that was yet another touch of generosity. In an era where many hospitality outfits nickle-and-dime their guests at each and every turn, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the mini bar snacks and non-alcoholic drinks were fully complimentary. A generous bounty of delicious, artisan brands was a classy touch that helped curb our peckish cravings throughout the stay while leaving a lasting impression as we departed.
Dining at Nine Orchard: A Culinary Journey
No review of Nine Orchard would be complete without mentioning its exceptional dining options. The hotel is home to several dining venues, each offering a distinct culinary experience that reflects the diverse flavors of New York City.
At the heart of the hotel’s dining scene is Corner Bar, a brasserie-style restaurant that serves a menu of classic American dishes with a modern twist. The space is both elegant and inviting, with leather banquettes, vintage lighting, and large windows that offer views of the bustling streets outside. The menu is thoughtfully curated, featuring everything from fresh oysters and charcuterie to perfectly cooked steaks and seasonal vegetables. The wine list is equally impressive, with a focus on natural and biodynamic wines that complement the flavors of the food.
For a more casual dining experience, the hotel’s Café has you covered. This charming spot offers a selection of pastries, sandwiches, and coffee drinks, making it the perfect place to start your day or grab a quick bite before exploring the city. The café’s relaxed atmosphere and friendly service make it a favorite among both hotel guests and locals.
Aesthetically Perfect…Gym? Indeed
If you’re like me, the only downside to adventurous travel is the risk of getting out of your fitness and wellness routine. I’ve never been one of those guys that ‘runs for fun,’ so a jog around the adjacent neighborhood to get one’s bearings has never been in the cards for me. I’m more of a resistance training person, so if a hotel has a decent setup of a few free weights I’m a happy camper.
Nine Orchard’s fitness studio is on a completely different level of function and beauty. Kitted out with resistance machines, free weights, and cardio equipment, the fitness studio aesthetics don’t miss a beat from the rest of the property. It felt more like I was working up a sweat in a Soho House designed living room than a hotel gym. It’s arguably the most beautiful space I’ve ever had the privilege of working out in while on the road.
A Prime Location For Your Next Visit
Located in the heart of the Lower East Side, Nine Orchard is perfectly situated for exploring one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Specifically nestled in Dimes Square, the hotel is within walking distance of some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as cultural attractions like the Tenement Museum and the New Museum. The nearby subway stations also make it easy to explore other parts of the city, from Midtown to Brooklyn. My personal favorite slice in the city – Scarr’s – is just a block away, as are beloved local restaurants Dimes and Kiki’s.
In conclusion, Nine Orchard Hotel is a luxurious and elegant retreat that offers the perfect blend of history, modernity, and exceptional service. Whether you’re visiting New York for business or pleasure, a stay at Nine Orchard is sure to leave you with lasting memories of the city’s unique charm and sophistication. If you’re looking for a home away from home, this is the spot.
