I have a confession: when I bought my first crib mattress, we looked for the (second) cheapest one on Amazon and quickly pressed “add to cart.” In my husband’s words, “what difference could it make?” Ah, to be a naïve parent-to-be….
We quickly learned after welcoming our son that there was, in fact, a huge difference between crib mattresses. Maybe it’s something most parents-to-be know, but we certainly did not. After being told some horror stories about crib mattress incidents, we decided to look into other options. Enter: the Newton Baby Crib Mattress ($299.99).

Newton’s New Laws for Babies
Newton Baby was founded by Michael Rothbard, a father himself to three children, after he experienced all of the struggles of sleep with babies. He realized innovation in the crib mattress space was almost non-existent, and he got to work creating a unique product that allowed for safer, better sleep. Their offerings now go far beyond just a crib mattress. Having expanded to older kids’ mattresses, as well as pet beds (gotta look out for the furry kiddos), it’s safe to say that Michael and his team have started a sleep revolution for parents and babies alike.
The Anatomy of an Award-Winning Crib Mattress
If you’re spending $300 on a crib mattress (or if it’s taking up precious real estate on your baby registry), you want it to exceed your expectations and be worth the extra moolah you’re spending beyond a “normal” crib mattress. Newton Baby has truly built a unique, unlike-any-other crib mattress that in my opinion, is well worth the extra bucks.
First and foremost, safety was top-of-mind when this thing was engineered. Unfortunately, suffocation is a real hazard in infant sleeping… and once you hear about it, you can’t unhear about it. When I learned about this risk, I had trouble sleeping. Luckily, the crib mattress is 100% breathable, utilizing their special Breathe-Thru Technology, which reduces the risk of suffocation – and reduces my midnight wake-ups freaking out about whether my son was still breathing. Many parents even try this for themselves, taking the #Breathe2Believe challenge, sticking their mouths wide open on the mattress to see if the claims are true.
It also is 100% washable – and it’s one of the only crib mattresses on the market that is. I had my doubts about this one, but it’s true! The cover is machine-washable and the inside can easily be washed inside your shower or bathtub. Finally, it just feels nice, thanks to the inner Wovenaire core that is 90% air by volume. Once I felt the Newton Mattress, I couldn’t un-feel that our son’s old mattress felt like a crappy camp mattress. You know the ones… think bunk beds at summer camp with some kid’s name written on it from 10 years ago? Yeah, that type of camp mattress.
All Cribs Mattresses Are Not Made Equal
One of the other things I found fascinating about the brand is that the crib mattress is 100% recyclable. While we plan to use this for all of our future children, it is nice to know that this won’t go into the dumpster when we’re done with it. Because of its makeup of food-grade material (think: like a yogurt cup), the entire mattress can be recycled when your baby is done with it.
That’s not the only green thing about this mattress – it is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means it also has been independently tested and certified for low chemical emissions. It also contains no foam, latex, springs, and glue that other mattresses (cough, my old crib mattress, cough) have. Let’s be real, in a time where toxins are seemingly everywhere, sleep feels like a pretty important one to get right.
Our Little Sleep Study
I kid you not, our son slept an extra 45 minutes the night we put the mattress in the crib. And… he had 0 wake-ups throughout the night. I’m not saying it’s not a coincidence, but it’s awfully suspicious that a little guy who usually wakes up once throughout the night doesn’t wake up and sleeps in a ton. On the second night, he did wake up… but I blame that on the entire cup of water I gave him right before bed to soothe his coughing. He did, however, sleep in again an extra 30 minutes. Still a win in my book!
More importantly, though, I was able to rest easy knowing that he is safe and sound. We have a second baby on the way and there’s no question I’ll be using a Newton for our newborn.
Rest Easy, Baby
While the Newton Baby Crib Mattress is certainly on the pricier end, you just can’t put a price on knowing your child is safe and sound. The rest I’ve been able to have knowing this, as well as him sleeping in, has been priceless. But don’t take my word for it – try it yourself for 100 days risk-free. You might just catch yourself falling in love… and falling asleep easier.
