Monaco, synonymous with luxury, glamor, and exclusivity, is undoubtedly the crowned jewel of the French Riviera–both in terms of size and opulence. Although this tiny principality is only 2.1 square kilometers (514 acres) in size, it offers a ~wealth~ of incredible experiences for luxury travel enthusiasts. Famous for its royal family, high-stakes casinos (Casino de Monte-Carlo is unlike any other), and incredible hotels, this affluent country is a small pocket of elegance tucked between the French Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. Whether you’re coming here to revel in the history, enjoy a seaside getaway, or simply soak in the sophistication, Monaco offers all that and so much more. Ahead, get the inside scoop on where to stay, dine, and explore, all with expert tips and insights from a luxury travel journalist who experienced the grandeur for herself.
Getting Here
While Monaco doesn't have its own airport, it’s easy to reach. Most visitors fly into the Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport, which is about 19 miles away. From there, you can choose between a few different transportation methods depending on your preference for speed and/or style. For the quickest route, hop on a helicopter transfer, which takes only seven minutes (!) and has beautiful views of the coastline. If you prefer a more casual trip, a car or taxi will get you to Monaco in about 40 minutes. However, depending on the time of year you visit, traffic can get pretty backed up so be sure to keep that in mind. Another option is to take a 25-minute train from Nice’s Gare de Nice-Ville to Monaco’s Monte Carlo Station, which is affordable and very scenic.
To Stay
Simply put, Monaco’s hotel scene is a clear reflection of its high-end lifestyle. With a handful of iconic properties, visitors have no shortage of stays that offer next-level comfort, style, and service. Whether you’re looking for classic magnificence or something more contemporary, these luxury hotels provide the perfect home base. Not to mention, because the country is so small, every hotel’s location is up to par.
Perhaps the best–and most prestigious–hotel is the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Located in the heart of the ritzy Place du Casino, this legendary 5-star hotel, which was built in 1864, was Princess Grace’s favorite. In 2019, the property underwent a $280 million renovation that sought to modernize it for the 21st century while preserving its iconic features. As one might expect, the rooms and suites are lavishly appointed with crystal chandeliers, sleek decor, and stunning furnishings. In terms of the hotel’s exclusive offerings, these include the famed Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo spa and the Le Louis XV - Alain Ducasse, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine.
The second-best hotel (and my personal favorite) is the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo. With stunning architecture, a dreamy atmosphere, lavish interiors, and Michelin-starred restaurant Le Vistamar, this hotel is perfect for those who want a mix of luxury and belle-époque charm. Pro tip: Hit the Blue Gin bar at night–it’s the place to see and be seen.
To Dine
Foodies, listen up: Dining in Monaco is as much about the ambiance as it is about the gourmet offerings. From fresh seafood markets to the abundance of locally grown fruit and vegetables, gastronomy plays a big part in the culture here. As I mentioned before, one of the most iconic dining spots is Le Louis XV - Alain Ducasse. Along with some of the best dishes in the world, this spot has a truly exquisite atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. For another Michelin-starred choice, Le Grill, which specializes in grilled meats and seafood, has some of the most beautiful views in the area.
Want something more casual? (And by casual, I mean casual for Monaco standards, of course.) Head to Café de Paris Monte-Carlo, located right next to the Casino de Monte-Carlo. This lively brasserie is my favorite restaurant of all, as it has incredible food and drinks and great people-watching. Be sure to get the steak frites and the Tropézienne aux Fraises for dessert–neither will disappoint.
Another great option is Neptune, a Mediterranean spot located on the sands of Larvotto Beach. Here, enjoy delicious cocktails (I loved the Cosmopolitan) paired with sweeping ocean views.
To Do
Small but mighty, Monaco is filled with tons of activities and attractions that cater to every type of traveler. Historical landmarks, beautiful museums, and colorful gardens dot the landscape, offering plenty of spots to enjoy the principality.
Of course, one of the most famous attractions is the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Even if you don’t plan to gamble, the casino’s iconic exterior, which is lined with luxury cars, is worth the visit. You can also explore the Opera House inside the casino, designed by Charles Garnier, who was the architect behind the Paris Opera.
For those interested in Monaco’s royal history, a visit to the Prince’s Palace is a must. The palace, which has been home to the Grimaldi family since the 13th century, sits on top of a hill overlooking Monaco. It offers guided tours of its staterooms as well as opportunities to see the changing of the guards. (Trust me, this palace is too beautiful to pass up.) Nearby, the Monaco Cathedral is another historic site where Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Kelly are buried.
Be sure not to miss the Oceanographic Museum, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. This museum and aquarium, founded by Prince Albert I, is home to a big collection of marine life, including sharks, sea turtles, and tropical fish. Looking to enjoy some sunshine? Head to Larvotto Beach, Monaco’s main public beach, where you can sunbathe or swim in the clear waters of the Mediterranean. Plus, there are some fabulous restaurants along the sand. For a more exclusive experience, book a day at one of the private beach clubs like La Note Bleue, which has (very) plush sunbeds, delicious food, and great live music.
The Magic of Monaco
Monaco may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but it has so much to offer, from its world-class hotels and restaurants to its glamorous casinos and beach clubs. Whether you’re lounging by the Mediterranean, dining at Michelin-starred restaurants, or simply enjoying the culture and history, this principality offers a slice of paradise for those who like the finer things in life (myself included).
