We don't like

Diaper pants are a game-changer for parents of active toddlers, as they provide the ease and flexibility of pull-up underwear combined with the absorbency and protection of traditional diapers. They can make life so much easier. Quicker diaper changes, a better fit, more manageable potty training – their benefits are numerous.

So, while we put several diaper brands to the test a while back, we figured it was time to do the same for some of the most popular diaper pants. Here, we’ve tried HealthyBaby's Diaper Pants, Coterie’s The Pant, and Dyper’s Training Pants to discover which brands deliver on safety, absorbency, sustainability, and convenience. Let’s find out…

The Players

HealthyBaby: Renowned for its commitment to nontoxic baby products, HealthyBaby’s Diaper Pants are the first-ever EWG Verified Safe diaper pants designed to cater to babies and toddlers up to 46+ pounds. HealthyBaby recognizes that all children develop at their own pace and focuses on providing safe, high-quality diapering solutions for all families and children. The only Plastic Neutral diaper brand, HealthyBaby has extended its sustainable essentials into larger sizes 7 and 8 in the diaper pant category.

Coterie: Coterie was founded to address the gap in quality between US and Japanese diapers. Known for their premium performance, Coterie’s diaper pants are designed to provide exceptional absorbency and comfort.

Dyper: Dyper focuses on sustainability and safety, using bamboo-based materials for their diaper pants. They offer a partially compostable option, catering to eco-conscious parents looking for an environmentally friendly solution.

They all look pretty similar…but how do they perform?

Test 1: Safety

HealthyBaby: HealthyBaby is the first and only EWG Verified diaper pant, meaning they are free of 2800+ chemicals and materials linked to health harm. They are also totally chlorine-free (TCF) and only plant-based materials cradle baby’s skin, providing an extra layer of safety for your little one. As founder Shazi Visram explains, “My vision was to create the safest and highest quality diapers to cradle baby’s developing skin.” And she did!

Coterie: Coterie diaper pants are also TCF and free from many major chemicals, making them a good choice for safety-conscious parents. They also incorporate some plant-based materials.

Dyper: Dyper’s bamboo-based diaper pants are TCF and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning they are free from harmful chemicals. They are a safe and eco-friendly option.

Winner: HealthyBaby

Test 2: Absorbency

HealthyBaby: HealthyBaby's diaper pants are designed with specific leak protection and “magical air channels.” They feature Flashdry Technology, which keeps babies 4x drier and better able to handle higher volumes. Without going into too much detail, I can attest to the fact that these pants work. My little one has seriously put them to the test, and I’ve been impressed every time.

Coterie: Coterie claims its diaper pants are exceptionally absorbent, holding up to 80% more liquid than leading brands. And while they’re great most of the time, we did have one big blowout in them. Any parent knows that one blowout is all it takes to shake up your confidence, and that’s what happened to us.

Dyper: Dyper’s Diaper Pants offer decent absorbency, but honestly, they felt closer to the thinner diapers on the market we’ve tried. They’re okay, but nowhere near as absorbent as Healthybaby or Coterie.

Winner: Tie between HealthyBaby and Coterie

Test 3: Sustainability

HealthyBaby: These diaper pants are made in a carbon-neutral manufacturing plant, made with 35% plant-based materials and are certified Plastic Neutral. HealthyBaby offsets every gram of plastic used through a partnership with rePurpose, making them a highly sustainable choice. The diapers are made from sustainable, hypoallergenic materials (like organic cotton) that are gentle on baby’s delicate skin and the planet.

Coterie: Coterie is investing in sustainable materials R&D with the goal of creating a fully sustainable diaper, but they aren’t quite there yet.  The main source of their absorbent core is actually plastic, so that extra absorbency comes with an environmental trade-off that many parents don’t know about.

Dyper: Dyper’s bamboo-based diaper pants are partially compostable, and you need to sign up for their ReDyper program for $20 extra per pickup of dirty diapers to be a part of the program. This program is available in 21 cities or you can ship them in, and the brand will responsibly dispose of them.

Test 4: Convenience

HealthyBaby: Available for both subscription and one-time purchases on their website, HealthyBaby diaper pants can also be found online at Target.com and Amazon.com (they’re called SmartyPants there). Plus, they’re a really convenient option for both planned and emergency purchases.

Coterie: In addition to their direct-to-consumer model, Coterie diaper pants are available at Erewhon, Whole Foods, and Wegmans, but I think their diaper pants are only available online.

Dyper: Similarly, Dyper also has a subscription model, plus the brand’s diapers are available in some Walmart stores and on Walmart.com.

Winner: HealthyBaby and Dyper

Overall Winner: HealthyBaby

After evaluating safety, absorbency, sustainability, and convenience, HealthyBaby definitely takes the cake for best diaper pants. Their commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and overall performance is second to none.

I also love knowing that the brand is committed to providing solutions for all families. According to Visram, “We believe that development is not a race, it’s a flow. So we need to have a range that supports babies of all sizes.” I’m a huge fan of the brand’s mindset, and its products, too!
