Having bangs is a constant exercise in letting go of expectations and being present. Sound dramatic? Clearly you don’t have them.
Nothing makes me turn to my break-glass-in-case-of-emergency Zen breathing techniques more than my unpredictable bangs. Every morning is a surprise – Will my childhood cowlick reappear for an encore performance? Will a mysterious swoop materialize for the first time? Did the new, genius bangs trimming technique I copied from TikTok last night result in triumph or disaster? If I’ve learned one thing from being a lifelong bangs-haver, it’s that I am very much at the mercy of the elements. But with a few key tools, I’ve managed to conquer my temperamental fringe and have achieved Nirvana – smooth, well-behaved, humidity-resistant, and – dare I say it – flawless bangs.
Use these essential products to combat frizz, unruly cowlicks, post-sweaty-commute volume loss, and any other bangs emergencies you might encounter. Deep breaths. You look great!
First and foremost, invest in a good comb. Make it a cute one. I keep a Machete comb on me at all times – I have one for the bathroom, one for my purse, and a few floating around my car. I love Machete’s wide range of colors and patterns. A fine toothed comb works well for my hair texture, but Machete carries combs for every hair type. Every morning I wet my bangs, comb them through using my Machete No. 1, and blow dry them into submission using a criss-cross pattern that my hairstylist showed me a while back.

The other key component in my morning bangs ritual is a great hair dryer. I bought this Conair Compact Dryer a couple years ago when I was sick of lugging a full size dryer back and forth to my partner’s house and it ended up becoming the dryer I turn to every morning, whether I’m sleeping at my place or theirs. It’s small enough to fit in a tote, but powerful enough to get the job done fast.

For high-humidity days, or weeks when the changing seasons leave my hair particularly frizzy and confused, I use a tiny bit of this Davines All in One Milk on wet bangs before I dry them to help them settle down. It’s also great to use on any split ends after a shower, so I like to keep a travel size handy to use as my all purpose smoother/hair-tamer when on the road.

My number one hair essential is the Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil. I use it from roots to ends almost every day, and have repurchased it more times than I can count. A little goes a long way in taming flyaways and smoothing your bangs.

A good dry shampoo is an essential weapon in the bangs-taming arsenal. I love the smell and feel of the Davines This Is An Invisible Dry Shampoo. It refreshes your hair without leaving a chalky residue. Spray some on after a long day and you’re ready for a night out!

When you don’t have time to go to the salon for a trim, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. I use these classic Tweezermans to get the job done.

When all else fails, my secret weapon is a chic bandana. I sweep my bangs to the side, tuck them under the head scarf, and voila – sticky, sweaty bangs hidden, and I can pretend I’m Jane Birkin lounging in a Parisian park. This summer, I kept a Block Shop bandana in my bag in case I needed to cover up. Their amazing DIY block printing kit lets you customize your own bandana. Love!

Having bangs can feel like a life or death battle, especially during unpredictable seasonal changes. An unruly, frizzy morning can feel like the worst omen in the world. If you’re looking to turn your day around and avoid a bangs-induced meltdown (been there, believe me), keep these bangs styling essentials on you whenever you can. And if you decide to throw in the towel and clip back or cover up, no judgment. Tomorrow’s a new day.
