We like
We don't like
Charmcore is the type of TikTok trend we see widely popularized for a hot second, then forgotten about — but that’s not to say it doesn’t have staying power. The very essence of the aesthetic is simple and steadfast: personalize your outfits with an abundance of accessories to show the world who you are. While you could easily misinterpret it to mean pile on all the jewelry no matter what it looks like, when done best, Charmcore involves collecting the baubles that really matter to you and represent your character. There are so many methods of styling keychains, layering necklaces, stacking bangles, or orchestrating an “earring party,” and the look should always feel unique to your taste. But elevating the ensemble is key.
Charmcore has its roots in the ‘90s and early aughts. It reminds me of the days I strung my Giga Pets and Tamagotchis through my belt loops, not just for easy access, but as the finishing touch to my outfit. Jewelry back then was kitschy and colorful; customizable and cool — it begged for compliments or at the very least acknowledgment. And we’re seeing a resurgence and newfound appreciation for that jewelry now.
While it may seem like a hassle or even time consuming to sift through charms, chains, and other decorative hardware, the beauty of Charmcore is that it’s a way to proudly display your personal collection of trinkets and treasures all at once, and that notion makes it instantly more fun to get dressed.
Ahead, I share three different ways I like to style Charmcore looks from day to night.
Daytime Casual Charmcore Outfit
Charmcore is a decidedly “cutesy” look, leaning on the girlier side of the outfit spectrum. For that reason, contrasting an abundance of jewelry with oversize silhouettes can make for an intriguing juxtaposition. The Balenciaga City Bag is back in a big way thanks to the Charmcore trend (see: these TikTok videos for proof), most likely since the bag soared to fame during the early aughts and it’s equipped with plenty of hardware that complements and easily clips onto your keychains.
While I added two small keychains that speak to my personality, I also love the idea of wrapping a chunky chain belt around the top handle of this bag to add extra metal. I own the larger-sized version of this iconic satchel, so I complemented it with an XL vintage tee and baggy Good American jeans. The Adidas sneakers lend a sporty, daytime-casual vibe, while the Jenny Bird hoops and choker necklace add further polish. More than anything, this outfit is proof that you can pull off Charmcore, even if your top priority is comfort.
Daytime Chic Charmcore Outfit
The very essence of Charmcore is a flirty and fun look that’s doused with personality, so adding bold color should come as no surprise. Breaking up a monochrome set with your jewels can be a fun way to add dimension and subtly acknowledge the fact that you know your look is kitschy — but you wear it with pride. I’ve been a fan of butterflies ever since I got two butterfly tattoos on my fingers, so now I like to collect in-your-face accessories that circle back to it and add to the conversation.
Dangling charm earrings are another way to attract attention and play into the charm aesthetic from the early aughts. And finally, if you have an extra necklace that just doesn’t feel right with the cut of your top, I suggest wrapping it around the handle of your bag to show that no bauble is left behind.
Night-Out Charmcore Outfit
I always reach for black to elevate a night-out look, and there’s something about a co-ord set that works to streamline when your accessories are rather statement making and playful. I also always add a pair of dark sunglasses for polished sophistication. For an evening Charmcore look, I suggest sticking to all-gold and either layering two charm necklaces or opting for one chunky chain-link choker. While I wore an anklet, a gold belt — whether thin or thick — is another prime choice for achieving this aesthetic.
