During quarantine, I’ve discovered that gift-giving is one of my love languages. Both of my sisters and my dad have celebrated birthdays in the past few months, and I undertook the task of curating the perfect birthday experience for each (did I mention they’re an excruciatingly picky bunch?) with surprising glee. So far my win/loss gift-approval ratio is looking pretty good, but with several longtime-friend birthdays on the horizon, I’ve been feeling the pressure to maintain my stats.
While searching online, I discovered Birthdate Candles -- the bespoke candle company that has hired a team of astrologers to ensure that the gift you choose will be a hit with its recipient. I mean this literally -- they’ve created 365 unique candles (one for each day of the year) that combine astrology, numerology, and tarot for the ultimate bespoke experience. Their astrologers seem to be on point: Birthdate Candles has sold tens of thousands of candles and generated over 1,500 five-star reviews in their first year since launch.
Cosmic Concepts
As someone with only the slightest knowledge on all things cosmic, I did a bit more research before purchasing my own Birthdate Candle to take for a sniff-test. For anyone else unfamiliar with the cosmic concepts Birthdate Candles employs:
- Astrology is the explanation of how the movements of stars and planets impact human lives and behavior.
- Numerology is the belief in numbers or numerical value and their influence over events in human life.
- Tarot is a set of playing cards used dating back to the 15th century for fortune-telling.
Birthdate Candles uses astrology, numerology, and tarot in combination to create packaging with in-depth personality assessments and explanations, in addition to a unique scent for each $38 candle they sell. While I was skeptical at first, the site’s amazing reviews by Bustle, Elite Daily, Buzzfeed, and the like convinced me a Birthdate Candle was the ultimate gift -- so I started with a gift to myself.
My Birthdate Candle
Astrology, numerology, and tarot aside (I’ll get to those shortly), I was instantly impressed with the product Birthdate Candles has created. Packaged minimalistically-yet-beautifully, Birthdate Candles are heavy -- probably because each hand-poured candle has a burn time of 60-80 hours. I’ve purchased my fair share of candles, so I could tell that Birthdate Candles are created with quality -- after burning my October 18 candle (which includes notes of hydrangea, peony, and jasmine in an all-natural coconut and soy wax blend) for just a few hours, my entire room was enveloped with a delicious smell that lingered for days. My family noticed the scent, too -- my parents have dipped into my room with compliments each time I light my candle.
I have a sensitive nose that tends to get overwhelmed by most scented products, but my Birthdate Candle has been calming and rejuvenating -- I’m not sure if the company’s master perfumers or astrologers are to thank, but I’ll hand props to them both: working with my Birthdate Candle lit on my desk has become a ceremonial experience.
The additional information on the candle’s label is icing on the cake: each candle denotes its birth date’s sign, decan (I had to look it up, too -- it’s a subdivision of each individual sign), number, planet, strengths, and weaknesses on the front label. For anyone wondering, I am apparently guiding, lucid, and polymathic, but also self-conscious, cryptic, and disappointed -- if I agree with my strengths, does that mean I also have to accept my weaknesses as true, too?!
The back of each candle offers a more descriptive explanation of people of your birth date, plus your tarot card, ruling planet, and ruling number. While I won’t bore you with an in-depth description of the children of October 18, I will say that I was impressed with the quality of content on the candle -- it is specific, well-written, and freakishly on point. While I typically don’t trust any run-of-the-mill horoscope or zodiac prediction, the information Birthdate Candles presents feels highly elevated and professional. It’s clear that the Birthdate team of astrologers invested time and knowledge into crafting a personal and detailed assessment for each date.
I’m excited to purchase Birthdate Candles for each of my friends -- I imagine chatting about the accuracy of our respective candles will lead to fun conversations and deep explorations on who we are and how we’ve been shaped. Whether you’re a skeptic or believer, Birthdate Candles is a thoughtful and well-priced gift worth exploring -- while I’m no astrologer, I predict good things are in your future with the purchase of this bespoke candle.
