Your best friend is in Paris for the week, a coworker is in New Zealand following the “workcation” model, and another seems to have flown to Japan and logged off entirely. You don’t need us to tell you that travel is back, and more popular than ever—the flight prices do that for us. But long-haul flights, actually, even short ones, can wreak havoc on your skin, and making sure you’re glowy and camera-ready by the time you arrive at a dream destination means planning ahead.
Airplanes are both too dry and too high-pressure for skin, meaning you have to combat the conditions to land glowing and smooth. Here’s a brief manifesto on how to do that, from making sure you’re heading onto your flight with clean, makeup-free skin, to serums, mists, face masks, eye cream and even hand lotion and body wipes. Hey, your face isn’t the only part of your skin that deserves TLC on a long trip.
Face Wipes
One of the best things about these wipes is that they’re individually packaged, so you can grab one or two to stick into your carry-on without needing to lug an entire tub of them around the world. Made from bamboo, and packed with ingredients like witch hazel, aloe vera, and green tea, these wipes both get rid of your makeup and protect your skin with a generous dose of Ursa Major’s “ 4-in-1 tonic” that’s spiked with even more naturally hydrating essentials. Even if you just swipe your makeup off with one of these after you’re already boarded and settled in your seat, it will make a world of difference. And most importantly, the wipe itself isn’t going to dry your skin out before the flight even starts.

Serum
I’m not always in on Glossier products like a lot of people are because I have combination skin with lots of rosacea and acne flare ups, so their “no makeup makeup” look just doesn’t work for me. Having said that, Super Pure is still one of the best and most affordable ways to get your daily Niacinamide dose, which calms, smoothes, and hydrates skin. They formulated this serum with zinc, which also helps improve texture and clarity, and used a 5% Niacinamide to offer the most effective dose without irritating skin. All this to say, if you’re comfortable serum-ing mid-flight, this one will go a long way. It’s not sticky or dry, so the product won’t linger on your hands afterwards.

Face Mist
skincare and beauty brands currently on the market. Founder Lauren Jin is committed not just to excellent skincare, but sustainability, too, and that’s part of what motivated her to find a plant-alternative for hyaluronic acid. She came up with snow mushroom, a powerful ingredient used often in the K-Beauty space, and the star of this refreshing mist. I use it so frequently on plane rides that I can’t imagine traveling without it.

In-Flight Mask
Co-founders Lauren Ireland and Marianna Hewitt put Summer Friday on the map with their very first product, the Jet Lag Mask, and it remains a staple for pretty much any skincare obsessive who travels. Niacinamide shows up again here, along with glycerin, a humectant to lock in moisture, and more hyaluronic acid. Cucumber extract, cooling allantoin, bisabolol (taken from chamomile) and panthenol (more vitamin B) round out these completely vegan formula. If it’s good enough for Kim Kardashian, it’s good enough for me. Apply either before take off, on the flight (it dries clear), or before going to bed the first few nights after your trip.

Sheet Mask
Already renowned for their Celestial Black Diamond Lifting and Firming mask, which is a go-to for events and special occasions, 111 Skin has the answer for puffiness and dehydration, too. Named after the Cryotherapy technique, this mask doesn’t quite submit your face to intense cold, but it does mimic the technology with caffeine and Dr. Yannis’ powerful tetrapeptide that “depuffs and tightens while simultaneously inhibiting collagen breakdown” which happens to minimize the appearance of aging. That’s what we all want, and why the $30+ price point is so worth it. Slap one on as the pilot cues your final descent to look absolutely radiant by the time you hit baggage claim.

Eye Serum
With the added bonus that you don’t even have to touch your skin, this quick roll on de-puffing gel has all the benefits of the ocean built in. That means seaweed, hyaluronic acid, and peptides all team up to smooth out eye creases and lines, and help relieve dark circles and inflammation. The cooling roller ball helps wake you up after a long red-eye, or can be a nice pick-me-up mid-flight if you’re feeling particularly dry or puffy. Again, the germaphobes out there will love that they can apply something to their delicate under eye skin with zero skin contact.

Hand Lotion
Yes, this product costs a pretty penny, but there’s a reason the name translates from French to “force of life”—the Swiss-formulated hand lotion, aka creme, packs a serious punch for sorting out dry skin post-flight. Designed specifically for hands and lower arms, the creme penetrates the skin quickly, delivering moisture and drying almost instantly so there’s no sticky residue. Luzem boasts their own proprietary formula of prebiotics, peptides, hyaluronic acid and peptides, and it’s the deep moisturizing and fast absorption that really makes it worth your while. A little bit goes a long way, so stash this one in your bag solely for flights, and use a more affordable hand lotion at home.

Body Wipes
Your face isn’t the only thing that needs a refresh after the trip of hauling your luggage to the airport, rushing through security and TSA, and sitting on a plane full of people for several hours. If you have to head straight back into a public setting and don’t have time for a rinse, these “shower sheets” can be deployed in any plane or airport bathroom stall to get rid of the thin layer of grime that traveling induces. I love the fresh peppermint citrus scent but they also come in rose cucumber. The best part? They’re biodegradable.
