I’m no MLM’er, but I sure do believe in the power of essential oils to heal the mind, body, and spirit. One whiff of lavender oil and my central nervous system thinks it’s taken 1,000 naps!
However, as I’ve continued to progress in my #DeepWellness journey, I’ve discovered that the majority of essential oils, and “fragrance” in general, can be chock full of endocrine-disrupting, toxic chemicals like phthalates, sulfates, parabens, and [insert unidentifiable name of anything else you wouldn’t want in your home or body].
Jenna Todey—CEO and Founder of Aura House—has had enough of “Big Fragrance,” opting to elevate the wellness rituals and vibes of homes everywhere with non-toxic fragrance oil blends that have been professionally formulated by an award-winning perfumer, who knows what it takes to transcend your reality through a single inhalation.
I was curious to see how Aura House’s Starter Kit could possibly be that novel or interesting, given the essential oil / diffuser market is so crowded, so I went all in on fragrance as a priority for my home life. Here is my scent story.
We like
- All fragrances are formulated under Sephora Clean guidelines—safe for kids and pets.
- Fragrance oils last all day long at the same consistency
- Their fragrance collection has been designed by an award-winning perfumer
- The chic AF diffuser uses cold-air diffusion technology so you never need water or heat, which preserves the integrity of the scent
- Replaces your need for hormone-disrupting candles
We don't like
- Reduces flexibility if you consider yourself an essential oil-mixologist wanting more free reign over your scent profiles
My New Aura
When I received my Aura House Starter Kit, I had been in a tailspin for months about how my home smelled. No matter what I did, no matter what trash I threw out, no matter what surfaces I cleaned, I was left asking myself (and sometimes others), “Is it me?”
Upon arrival, I was totally shocked at how chic my kit was. “This is waaaaaay more than I thought I was getting,” I yelled to my mom (with whom I live, which is totally fine). The Scent Diffuser alone was unlike anything I had ever seen, looking like it was designed for Essential Oil Fashion Week (unlike all of my other diffusers that had been purchased on Amazon). Along with it came Grounding and Manifest, two perfectly bottled fragrance oils that seemingly fit with my 2024 intentions. While beautiful, I had absolutely no clue how all of these things were meant to work together. I just assumed it would be extremely complicated.
Such was not the case!
Jenna specifically focused on creating a seamlessly beautiful, easy-to-use system when she came up with Aura House. “I wanted the Scent Diffuser to look like a piece of art that would already be found in your home and be incredibly user-friendly. I’m allergic to instruction manuals, so I didn’t want to design anything that was too complicated for people to use and enjoy.”
All I had to do was unscrew the top of the Scent Diffuser and twist my preferred scent of the moment into the top—no pouring water, counting essential oil droplets, or making a mess needed. I pressed the button to turn it on, and then played around with scent intensity, eventually landing on the first setting (which is the least intense) to optimize the lasting duration of my fragrance oil.
Now over a month in, I have 1) barely made a dent in my fragrance oil and 2) am endlessly shocked by how consistently good my home smells. When I say “consistent,” I mean that the fragrance quite literally never subsides. Better yet, there is no need to ever tend to my scent system. My Scent Diffuser runs all day on its own accord—silently, too, which is worth mentioning. If it wasn’t for its sleek design that adds that je ne sais quoi to my kitchen countertop, I wouldn’t even notice that it was there at all.
Most importantly, my current fragrance oil profiles are euphorically delicious. Because of how easy it is to “plug and play” my scents, I’ve been able to change things up depending on my mood (which has been consistently improved since my home no longer smells stale).
Reduce, Reuse + Diffuse
There’s a reason Aura House “isn’t like the other girls.”
Most commercial diffusers leverage heat and/or water to produce an essential oil-infused vapor into the air. While that vapor can remind us of our nearest local spa, it doesn’t actually maintain consistent scent integrity for very long. Have you ever noticed how quickly the scent dies down? I sure have.
The Aura Scent Diffuser is taking a more technological approach, using cold-air diffusion technology, which eliminates the need for water or heat. Not only does it ensure that the scents are diffused in their original form, but it also preserves their integrity. According to Jenna, this clean, mold-free scent experience allows for more consistent scenting that lasts longer. “I’m a low-maintenance scent girl. I like to just twist in the bottle and then press a button. I can’t be trusted with refilling water or cleaning these things.”
With the ability to fragrance a room all day long, Jenna is even hoping Aura House will make people reconsider their scented candle usage. As a self-proclaimed “Candle Queen,” I was extremely upset to learn that even my “soy-blend” candles are not suitable for our health. Most candles—yes, even the seemingly harmless ones—use paraffin wax, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. So, when you light up a paraffin candle, it releases harmful chemicals into the air like benzene and toluene, which have been directly linked to respiratory issues, allergies, and carcinogens.
Smells Like Clean Spirit
With scent as the protagonist of this story, I got to thinking about why we, as a people, are so drawn to different fragrances. What is it about them that impacts us so deeply? Jenna explained that “scent is an incredible tool to bring you into desired states of being. There are fascinating studies showing certain scents help us feel calm, energized, focused, and happy.” It is such a powerful connector to some of our most sacred and special memories that the Aura House team has spent hundreds of hours curating their three collections: Wellness, Mémoire, and Away.
When considering what to diffuse and when, Jenna suggests that the scents you diffuse when you wake up should be different than what you’d choose right before you go to sleep. “I also believe that having your home smell elegant and sophisticated makes you feel more confident and proud—especially when everyone who comes over is complimenting you.”
Specific scents she’s crushing on at the moment:
Brb. Still Elevating.
It goes without saying that I’m still very much using my Aura House scent system (and thoroughly enjoying it). Given Jenna’s enthusiasm and passion for her other fragrance oils, I’m very excited to continue my scent journey.
I also greatly appreciate that Jenna practices what she preaches when she mentions “scent with integrity.” So much so, that every purchase from the Wellness Collection connects one person to local, reduced-cost mental health services in their community. We stan!
If you’re nervous about diving right into scents you can’t sample, Aura House gets it. “Scent is so personal, which is why we give our customers a 60-day money back guarantee so they can freely try any of our scents until they find the one they love.”
